Africa’s energy future must serve its people, not just corporate profits. Communities deserve affordable, reliable, clean energy not displacement, environmental destruction, and broken promises. Who benefits from these deals, and who pays the price? Energy justice must come first
Billions in energy deals. But are ordinary people getting the energy they need? During the Africa Energy Week, we asked who benefits, who bears the costs, and what energy investment should deliver. Watch the edited recording of last week’s X Space 👇 youtu.be/vyKnzJW7OgA

Whose development, & at whose expense? Progress cannot mean land dispossession, lost livelihoods & violated rights. From Tanzania to Uganda, communities deserve justice, transparency & accountability—not promises that leave them behind. #LandJustice #StopEACOP #ClimateJustice

Defending land should never come at the cost of a woman’s peace, dignity, or safety. Stand with rural women defending their land and demand justice, protection, and respect for their rights. ✊🏾🌍 #InternationalDayForRuralWomen #LandRights @NatureTalk_A @YGCUganda @GreenFaith_Afr
Rural women defending their land face more than corporate displacement - they carry the daily terror of state intimidation. Hear a son narrate the toll his activism takes on his mother. #InternationalDayForRuralWomen #LandRights #HumanRightsDefenders

One would (hope) think this would drive some sense into fossil fuel delegations attending upcoming #COP31 #EndFossilFuels NOW ❤️ @fossiltreaty @stopEACOP @EcocideLaw
Torrential rain has triggered flash floods across Istanbul, sweeping cars through neighbourhoods, stranding people, triggering landslides and bringing traffic to a standstill, with more rain expected.

Well said. Real energy progress is measured by who actually gets connected, not by the size of the deals.

Lowball rates and lawsuits against residents who just say no. That is not a fair process, it is coercion. These families deserve real compensation for their land and crops. TotalEnergies should be ashamed.

🚨 "We want adequate compensation for our land." In Kakuto, near the border, residents reveal how EACOP offered lowball rates, ignored crop values & sued those who refused. TotalEnergies' "fair process" is corporate bullying. 🔗 Watch via @ntvuganda: youtu.be/zRoeqNeCjp8?si=lPrm…

In Kakuuto village, kyotera district, near the Uganda Tanzania border, families from seven villages say they are still waiting for EACOP land compensation some since 2019. One family was offered UGX 17 million for 3.69 acres and rejected it. Another was offered UGX 3.7 million for 6 acres. Title holders say tenants were paid and they were not. Rejecting a low figure should not leave you unpaid, or in court, with nowhere to start.@stopEACOP @Parliament_Ug @openbriefings @AfiegoUg @UrgentAct @naturaljustice Credit:@ntvuganda Watch full video on NTV below: youtu.be/zRoeqNeCjp8?si=07KU…

Beyond the promises of oil and economic development lies a more sad story of frontline communities whose land and livelihoods have been disrupted, ecosystems altered, and human rights put under pressure. Turns out there was no FPIC ( free prior and informed consent) with the affected people hence a meaningfulconsultation was not made before their land was used go the construction of this project, their land rights were not respected and human rights were deprived. The voices from the frontline communities have not been heard those that tried to speak up have been silenced. What’s next for these communities whose lives have been disrupted? Where does that leave the environment/biodiversity/ecosystem? How long is our over dependence on fossil fuels going to stop. Shouldn’t we be investing in sustainable energy options instead? #StopEACOP #ClimateJustice #ClimateActionNow #JustTransition #LandRights #EndFossilFuels.

Heartbreaking. Families losing their land and safety so oil can flow. I keep asking where the justice is for these people.

As floodwaters overwhelm Hoima and surrounding regions in Uganda, the link between fossil fuels and extreme climate events has never been clearer. Extracting more oil at the cost of displaced families and destroyed ecosystems is not progress - it's environmental destruction. Uganda and the wider region deserve investment in clean, decentralized, renewable energy that builds resilience, not projects that accelerate global warming. #repowerafrika 🎥:Daily Monitor

Renewable energy shift may lead to neocolonialism, Nnimmo Bassey warns naturenews.africa/renewable-… He faulted arguments that African countries should continue using fossil fuels because the West industrialised through them, likening it to continuing to take from a buffet “when the table itself is already on fire.” Tracing modern extraction to slavery, plantation agriculture and colonial trade, Bassey asked what happens when land, water, forests and human bodies are turned into commodities.
