A technical thread on loss scaling in diffusion and flow matching models (related to a new preprint): Since the dawn of time, people have been messing with (or dropping entirely) these pesky time-dependent loss scaling terms, mostly because the models train better without them.

Yes, on release day outside of Fry's in San Diego on a cool and crisp November morning. Now the store has been torn down and the site is slated to be the home of a new 310-unit apartment complex building.
The Nintendo GameCube was released in North America 24 years ago today! Did you buy one in 2001?

Beautiful advice in this video. Family and career are not and should not be mutually exclusive.
Starting a research career is tough. Starting a family? Also tough. Doing both at the same time? That’s the big question many early-career scientists are quietly asking. In this short video, I share some of my thoughts on one of the most personal yet unspoken challenges in academia: balancing/starting a family life with the demands of building a lab and a scientific career. I can’t explain it exactly, but I imagine the taste to be the cool, slightly metallic, faintly musty, vaguely chemical smell in a 1990s office building when the AC kicked on.

1/8 Excited to share our new paper in Science Advances! We investigated the evolution of endothermy in ray-finned fishes by integrating phylogenomics, ecomorphology, fossil occurrence, and comparative genomics across 205 marine vertebrates. 👉 science.org/doi/10.1126/scia…

I used to sit in the seats in front of the dugout along first base at Jack Murphy Stadium once a month thanks to my friend’s dad. Ricky would always talk to us and give us baseballs. Not only was he fun to watch, but his kindness to fans has made an impression on me to this day.
We mourn the passing of former Padres legend and National Baseball Hall of Famer, Rickey Henderson. Rickey played for the Padres from 1996-1997 and again in 2001. He broke Ty Cobb’s All-Time Runs Scored record with a home run late in the ‘01 season and recorded his 3,000th career hit on the final day. He also set a Major League record with 81 career leadoff home runs and finished with an MLB-record 1,406 stolen bases. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time.

Just published a deep dive into extracting every ReviewBrah rating into a single markdown table using command-line tools and LLMs. If you’re into data wrangling and fast food commentary, check it out: stevenweaver.org/tutorials/r…

In Mexico City, I found food warning labels helpful.
Two former top health officials battled big food to reduce the salt and sugar in Americans’ diets—and failed. Here’s their advice on how RFK Jr. can succeed in Making America Healthy Again. 🔗 on.wsj.com/4g4kKSh

1/ Genome-wide (and other) positive selection screens in genomes may be severely biased by alignment and other errors. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/… we (@averyselberg, @NathanClark111, @ChikinaLab, @nekrut, @stvnwvr, @aglucaci, @timsackton) propose a simple fix.

Such a pleasure to attend this event. Learned a lot about NCBI resources for antimicrobial resistance.
We received outstanding participation and engagement during our recent codeathon to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR), co-hosted by @NIAIDNews! We had 60 participants that formed 10 teams with 10 countries represented. Learn more about their work: ow.ly/OqVO50TJf27
