In an interview with Olivia Resenterra of Kyiv Desk, poet and translator Iya Kiva shares her vision on the role of poetry in the russo-Ukrainian war. Describing poetry as "a private soldier in the battle of narratives," she speaks to how poetry's language and form, from free or experimental texts to rhymed and more traditional ones, become a crucial part of cultural defense, "to preserve everything and everyone." "In this sense, Ukrainian poetry is simply doomed to a new language, because only in this way can it be alive and true. What is happening in Ukrainian poetry today resembles the eruption of a volcano that explodes and explodes, because the Ukrainian land during the great Russian-Ukrainian war is a huge open wound that writers are trying, if not to heal, then at least to describe, because words can also be cotton wool, plasters, and bandages. It’s just that they need to be changed very often. And this requires intense poetic thinking, deep metaphoricity, and absolute and ruthless sobriety in the hell of war." #UkrainianLiterature

In an insightful review for The Times Literary Supplement @TheTLS, @BorisDralyuk, a poet, translator, and Associate Professor at the University of Tulsa, discusses the deeply moving poetry of Iya Kiva's @sumriko new collection, 𝘚𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘊𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘓𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 (translated by Amelia Glaser and Yuliya Ilchuk, with an introduction by Amelia Glaser). Highlighting themes of displacement, language, and war—where silence itself is "dressed in Cyrillic letters"—Dralyuk brings crucial attention to contemporary Ukrainian literary voices. Catch the complete piece on TLS. #HURIBooks #UkrainianLiterature #PoetryInTranslation #ContemporaryPoetry @HURI_Harvard

I picked up an anthology of contemporary Ukrainian women's poetry from the post office, which was published this year in the UK, and my poems are included. Here you can find the voices of 12 contemporary female poets, with a cover by the incredible Katya Lisova

I slept through yesterday's Russian attack on Lviv. And then I looked at this photo by Roman Baluk for a long time. If you look at the language of expression , it's an absolute Lviv pietà, but the 6-year-old boy in the photo is, fortunately, alive, although he has many injuries.

Charaf, Edwan i Kiva veuen units els seus noms per la guerra que ho sotraga tot. Per la resistència, també. Perquè comparteixen, sense haver-ho demanat, una mateixa tensió: crear en condicions adverses. @PENCatala @sumriko @VilaWeb "Charaf, Edwan i Kiva": vilaweb.cat/noticies/charaf-…

It's 'poem in your pocket' day in America, where people are encouraged to share a poem they like for the end of poetry month over there. One by Iya Kiva from me, from her bilingual collection Silence Dressed in Cyrillic Letters (trans. Amelia Glaser and Yuliya Ilchuk).

Today, we celebrate Iya Kiva's birthday, a Donetsk-born poet, translator, and journalist whose life and work have been reshaped twice by the russo-Ukrainian War. Now she lives in Lviv. Kiva's poetry has become a vital example of resistance that speaks to the world about Ukraine’s struggle by demonstrating the profound spiritual resilience and strength of its people in the face of imperial aggression. Her masterfully crafted poems carry multiple meanings, reaching in different directions across borders and cultures. Kiva's latest collection, 𝘚𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘊𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘓𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 (translated by Amelia Glazer and Yuliya Ilchuk), projects a belief that, even when life is shaken to its core, the fundamental values of freedom, safety, and cooperation remain worth fighting for. #HURIBooks #ukrainianliterature #ukrainianpoetry @HURI_Harvard

Sometimes we need more than ordinary speech to address the momentous events of our lives. But where ordinary words fall short, poetry begins—acting as a bridge between people and allowing us to see life from a different perspective. Starting today, we are launching a series of posts in recognition of World Poetry Day (March 21). They aim to invite listeners to engage with voices that shape memory, vulnerability, and hope. The cycle opens with the poetry of Iya Kiva from her collection, 𝘚𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘋𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘊𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘓𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴, translated by Amelia Glaser and Yuliya Ilchuk, and introduced by Amelia Glaser. #HURIBooks #UkrainianLiterature #WorldPoetryDay #UkrainianPoetry @HURI_Harvard
