Round announcement: Excited to see DefendEye take this next big step! James Buchheim and his team have raised a round led by NovaCapital, alongside IQT, ff Venture Capital, Hard2beat, and us. DefendEye is building autonomous drone systems for first responders. It has manufacturing facilities in Poland and the US, giving it direct control over production on both sides of the Atlantic. Looking forward to what’s ahead.

People are more important than hardware. In special operations, this is part of the DNA. In business and investing, this often gets lost, pushed to the back burner by the sheer inertia of the deal or situation. Our Venture Partner, Davin Michaelis, former U.S. military, is back with another thought piece: With the exception of the fringe 1% of human performance, the right person with subpar resources beats the subpar person surrounded by the best gear money can buy. Every time. Several years ago in northern Iraq, my team and our Kurdish partners ran a large stress shoot. In a stress shoot, you climb ropes, scale buildings, sprint up towers and hills, and clear obstacles or complete any physically demanding that maxes out your heart rate and puts you in difficult and unstable positions. You engage targets dispersed across the course, which are scored for time and accuracy. When the stress shoot ended, every American operator had placed ahead of every partner. To be clear, these partners were warriors. Men who live in combat while we rotate in and out, and the beneficiaries of years of training and millions of dollars of U.S. support. They were upset, and I understood why. They blamed the gap on our superior rifles and our optics — Gucci kit, admittedly. And they were far from the only people I have met over the years who believe the equipment makes the shooter. There was a lesson to teach our brothers in arms that day. So, we swapped weapons. We handed them our rifles and pistols, we took theirs, and we ran the entire grueling course a second time. Just running the course a second time I’m sure broke many of their wills and motivation, but the result was exactly the same. Every American placed ahead of every partner, now shooting the partners’ equipment. The difference was never the hardware. It was the fundamentals. We had invested, relentlessly, in the fundamentals that let us overcome any obstacle or unknown we walked into. We knew success came from effort and from within — never from something someone else handed us. This is where founders, investors, and entire organizations self-limit. We misread and misallocate value and risk onto everything except the core of the decision: Is this the right person, the right team, to build and deliver this vision? Although it’s easy to blame failure on the things we did not have, the reality is that the decisions and chain of events that led to the failure started many moves prior. Markets will shift. Tech will pivot. Competition will increase. However, the right team will not flinch, and the right team, properly resourced, is the lowest risk bet you will ever make. So to the early-stage founder and investor reading this: stop weighing the things that do not matter yet. There will be plenty of data to judge how well the business is run at the growth and scale stages. At the early stage, your edge is judgement about people. Bet on the operators, not the optics. People over hardware. Every time.

We teamed up with @OpenAI to provide a first glimpse of AI-native chemistry. GPT and Maria originated, tested, and proved an improvement to Chan–Lam coupling — a key reaction in drug discovery. 10,080 reactions. 3 months. Near-autonomous discovery in the physical world.
GPT-5.4 helped drive a medicinal chemistry project from literature review to a validated experimental result. Paired with Molecule.one’s Maria AI and specialized lab, the model proposed an unexpected way to improve a widely used reaction in drug discovery.

SpaceX showed a satellite 170 meters long this week. Starship is 124. The "AI Sat Mini" is bigger than the rocket designed to launch it. Many say orbital data centers are too ambitious. The economics are brutal, the engineering unsolved, the timeline a fantasy. They're not wrong about the constraint. They're wrong about the conclusion. A 1 GW orbital compute cluster needs roughly 4 km² of solar collection area. SpaceX's answer for now: 10,000 individual 100 kW satellites, each one fitting inside a fairing. Smart workaround but still a workaround. Musk himself closed his presentation with a video of future satellites being built on the Moon and launched by mass driver. He knows the current architecture has a ceiling. With in-orbit manufacturing, that ceiling disappears. You're no longer limited by what fits inside a rocket. You build where you operate. That's what we're working on at @_OrbitalMatter At that point, 1 GW isn't ambitious. It's just the starting point. #spacedatacenters #inorbitmanufacturing #spaceinfrastructure #spacetech #AIinfrastructure Source: @SpaceNews_Inc

Executive summary: Davin Michaelis spent 25 years in special operations prior to joining us as a venture partner. In this piece, he urges Defense Tech companies to move beyond building in isolation and focus on real-world impact. He believes true value is proven at the modern “decisive point” of conflict, specifically Ukraine, where technology directly shapes battlefield outcomes.

Space data centers will happen - but only if we build what Earth cannot AI’s growth is now hitting the physical limits of Earth. OpenAI’s internal target of 250 GW by 2033 exceeds the electricity consumption of entire nations. And if that’s the trajectory, the real question becomes: Where do we put the next 250 GW of AI? Space suddenly looks like the only environment that truly scales: continuous solar power, a perfect radiative sink, and infinite real estate. But here’s the catch: multi-megawatt compute in orbit needs massive solar arrays and thousands of square meters of radiators. These aren’t “deployables” anymore. They’re industrial-scale structures far too large to launch, even on Starship. Which means the only viable path forward is clear: Build the infrastructure in orbit, not on Earth. This is why @_OrbitalMatter exists. We manufacture these systems directly in space - 100+ meter booms, solar backbones, and radiator structures that never have to fit inside a rocket fairing. And this isn’t theoretical. It is the foundation of our technology roadmap: Printed booms → full deployable structures → 100m+ arrays and radiators → orbital infrastructure layer enabling space data centers. @OpenAI @SpaceX #SpaceDataCenters #InOrbitComputing #SpaceTech #SpaceInnovation

--> @NATO DIANA accelerates dual-use startups for the Alliance. I’ve joined as a mentor. Last week was our cohort kick-off in Riga. I especially enjoyed the exchange with the many active military personnel who participated. With an acceptance rate below 5%, getting into this program was highly selective for the startups.

NEW INVESTMENT: EU Motors develops European-made drone motors. This is mission-critical if the West wants any economic or military leverage in the future. The reality today: We are almost 100% dependent on Chinese drone parts. Michael Berger and his team are highly execution-focused and understand what Europe needs from its critical technology manufacturers today. They are developing reliable and scalable BLDC drone motors (the standard type of electric motors used in drones). Both development and manufacturing take place in Poland.
