Safe home, away from busy roads, wanted for 1 year old bonded siblings Martha & Monty. Born outside, they're not used to being handled: could you offer them a stable or a home with accommodation in a garden? They’d be so happy! #AdoptDontShop #WhiskersWednesday #Buckinghamshire

In the 1940s, Carolyn Swanson had an unusual guide: her white Persian cat Baby. Carolyn was blind, and Baby helped her get around by brushing her ankle with his tail to alert her to steps and curbs. Baby even received a medal for his devotion to Carolyn.

Three former SNP members who donated to referendum fundraisers have just had their demand for an internal legal probe formally rejected. The donors sent a letter to the Crown Office last week asking for a formal review into why Nicola Sturgeon was never prosecuted during the police investigation into the party’s finances. They were among the crowdfunders who raised £660,000 in 2017 and 2019 that was meant to be strictly ring-fenced for a future referendum. John Swinney admitted earlier this year that the money was actually spent on general SNP activities instead. The initial police investigation into that missing cash eventually led to separate charges against Sturgeon’s husband Peter Murrell. The former party chief executive was sentenced to five years in prison in June for embezzling more than £400,000 from the SNP over twelve years. Sturgeon herself was arrested and questioned as part of the five-year police probe back in June 2023. But police later confirmed the former First Minister would not face charges, with Sturgeon stating she had been completely exonerated. She has repeatedly denied having any knowledge of her husband's criminality. The three donors tried to use legislation introduced in 2014 that gives victims the right to review decisions made in criminal cases. They accused Sturgeon in their letter of clear obstruction of justice by allegedly blocking scrutiny of the party accounts during Murrell’s crime spree. Footage from 2021 previously uncovered by the Sunday Mail actually showed Sturgeon angrily warning members of the party’s ruling body to be very careful about suggesting there were any problems with the finances. But the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service responded on Friday to say the criteria for the right-to-review scheme had not been met. They explained that the police never actually asked them to prosecute the former First Minister. Prosecutors stated that police only sought the Crown's view on the evidence before Crown Counsel agreed that Sturgeon and former treasurer Colin Beattie should not be charged. Former donor Louise Williams is furious that the money was never used for the campaign as promised. "Everybody knows what ring-fenced means - it means it’s going to be spent on one purpose," she said. "That purpose was a referendum. They’ve admitted they’ve stolen it." Meanwhile, blogger Stuart Campbell is now threatening police with a judicial review for failing to reopen the probe into the ring-fenced money. #NewsForYou

Happy National Black Cat Day! 🐈‍⬛🩷 Today, let's continue to spread the word: the only bad luck following black cats, or any cat, is harmful superstition. All of us who are lucky enough to know and love a black cat have so many reasons to celebrate today! But to truly protect cats of any coat color, we need to address the greatest threat they face: archaic policies rooted in misinformation that put their lives at risk. Today, we hope you'll join us to Share the Truth about cats and the policies that help, not harm: alleycat.org/ShareTheTruth #NationalBlackCatDay #blackcats

🇬🇧 National Black Cat Day 🐈‍⬛ In August 1941, Blackie, the ship’s cat of HMS Prince of Wales, approached the gangway during Winston Churchill’s Atlantic meeting with President Roosevelt. Churchill bent down to stroke him, creating a famous wartime photograph. The crew renamed Blackie “Churchill.” He reportedly survived the battleship’s sinking by Japanese aircraft that December and reached Singapore with the sailors. But during the February 1942 evacuation, he went missing. His fate remains unknown.

Heads up that in the last decade, the full-time equivalent salary on the minimum wage is up 77% from £15k to £26.5k Meanwhile both the personal allowance and the 40% tax band threshold haven't moved in seven years In 2016 someone earning minimum wage paid just £795 of tax a year; now they pay £2,773
🚨NEW: Chancellor John Healey is set to raise the National Living Wage for workers aged 21+ from £12.71 to around £13.20 per hour, while 18–20-year-olds will see their rate increase from £10.85 to £11.27 Both represent an increase of 3.9%

1. Tell the papers you're going to put the price of beer up in the Budget 2. Don't *actually* put the price of beer up in the Budget and bask in the 'generous Chancellor' acclaim 3. Watch as the price of beer goes up anyway because you hiked the minimum wage

Britain punishes ambition - because ambition doesn’t win enough votes. 727,000 taxpayers face a 62% marginal tax rate. Just 1.5% of the electorate. Many are the professionals and entrepreneurs we need to drive growth. But fixing it wins few votes. So they leave it in place. Ideology over economics.

How any Chancellor can look at the state of the economy, the job losses, struggling businesses and sectors like Hospitality, and think, let’s increase their wage bills AGAIN… is totally beyond me. This is a deliberate demolition of small businesses. RIP THE ECONOMY 🪦
EXCLUSIVE John Healey will announce plans to increase the minimum wage by nearly 4 per cent but slow the rise for young people after warnings that they are being priced out of jobs The Times has been told that the national living wage, which applies to those aged 21 and over, is expected to rise from £12.71 to around £13.20 — an increase of 3.9 per cent However, Healey has decided not to repeat the big rises of the past two budgets in the national minimum wage, which applies to those aged 18 to 21 It will rise broadly in line with the rate for older workers - from £10.85 to around £11.27, an increase of 3.9 per cent It effectively spells the end of Labour’s manifesto pledge to bring the “discriminatory” minimum wage for young people into line with the living wage for older workers in this parliament The minimum wage increased by 26 per cent between 2025 and 2026, leading to stark warnings from employers that it risked impeding efforts to get 1 million “Neets” - young people not in education, employment or training - into work. Healey alluded to the approach in an interview with The Times last week, in which he spoke of the importance of the “trade-off between the level of the minimum wage and the employment rate” thetimes.com/article/c9142a2…
