Some advice I gave to a designer this week - scrub all mentions of UX from your site and portfolio if you want to work at startups. The reason: UX historically has delivered docs and flowcharts. That's not good enough for today's startups. They want prototypes, visual designs, and final deliverables. For UX designers wanting to work at startups I recommend using the new generation of tools to take your systems thinking and push it into delivering prototypes and more polished visual designs. Then call yourself a product designer. You'll be 10x more valuable to startups if you do this.

If you don't start your #designsystem work in a collaborative way, it's much harder to add in collaborative processes (like contribution) later. Collaboration looks different for each stage of maturity, but if you want it later you have to establish it early.

So far this year, we've increased adoption of Polaris in Shopify's admin by ~20%. A huge part of that work has been changing the culture around the design system so that product teams use and evolve it, instead of working around it.
