The @talkingolf history podcast episode #156 should be released later this evening/tomorrow morning. A fantastic dive into Dornoch & it’s Royal Links that sits upon the sea. Looks like we will follow this podcast w/ history of Stanley Thompson which I have promised for years.

An FYI, Connor of the Society of Golf Historians has lost control of his account. I am temporarily (hopefully) using this account below. From 40K Followers to 4:) @X is not willing to do anything to help.

Did you know that #TheOpen was created due to the death of the Champion Golfer for 19 years, Allan Robertson? Aged only 43, his death of jaundice in 1859 left the question, 'Who is the new Champion Golfer?' and to answer this @PrestwickGC created The Open in 1860. Here are a few things related to Allan including his snuff box, the obelisk over his grave and the plaque that was unveiled in the last year at his house beside the 18th green of the Old Course. When you hear on Sunday...'The Champion Golfer of the Year is...' it not only goes back to Allan, but his father Davie, who was Champion Golfer for 5 years and Tom Alexander of Musselburgh who defeated Davie in 1835 but was beaten by Allan in 1840. There is maybe a movie in that storyline alone.

Ben Hogan hero pose from @carnoustiegolf in the 1953 Open. If you have never listened to our @TalkinGolf History podcast with Ben Wright, “MY FRIEND BEN HOGAN” I strongly suggest you listen to it. Some great insights into Hogan from one of the men who covered him for decades. #GolfHistory @TheOpen

An older picture of me hanging out in the #Golffice with our Golden Retriever, “Hawkeye.” Hawkeye is currently recovering from surgery to remove cancer from her back hip. She is taking the recovery with a lot of grace- she wears the dreaded cone like a crown upon her head. Doesn’t fight me putting it back around her neck after eating. #GolfHistory

We are doing our best to get it up and running again.
For all of those asking, the @talkingolf history podcast site has crashed. We are working to restore it & all of our 150+ shows. Not really sure what the issue is at the moment. Very strange! We will get it up and running soon I hope. We have a new podcast ready for release. #GolfHistory

The @talkingolf history podcast presents: THE STORY OF GOLF IN 50 TOURNAMENTS, Part 1 with our special guest @anthonyjdear. We had a lot of fun recording this podcast & I did my best to add a 51st Tournament. Buy Tony’s book, published by @backninepress, “The Story of Golf in 50 Tournaments,” which tells the history of our game is easy to consume digestible chapters. #GolfHistory

For the diehards - I have released our latest episode this evening. Will promote it tomorrow, but it is already one of my personal favorites. If you love stories about underdogs, there may not be a better underdog than the Ancient Links of Musselburgh - the forgotten Open Rota course. @TheOpen @RandA @talkingolf

133 years ago today, the great Walter Hagen was born. Hagen’s first major appearance came at the historic 1913 U.S. Open—won by Francis Ouimet—where the young professional finished T-4. From there, he was off to the races. Hagen captured the U.S. Open the very next year and went on to win 10 additional major championships, along with five Western Opens, establishing himself as the dominant professional golfer of his era. By the time Hagen was finished, he had won more professional majors than any golfer who had ever lived—a mark that stood for over 40 years until it was surpassed by Jack Nicklaus. To this day, only Nicklaus and Tiger Woods have surpassed Hagen’s professional major total—and both benefited from one additional major each year, as the Masters was founded after Hagen’s prime. The Great Haig didn’t just win. He defined what it meant to be a professional golfer. @WorldGolfMuseum @USGA @PGAChampionship @TheMasters

This past week, I had the rare privilege of spending time with the Claret Jug. For 45 quiet minutes, I studied every curve, every engraving, every glint of light that danced across its silver surface. In my mind, it’s the greatest trophy in the world. If not for the company around me, I might have cried. It was my first time holding it—truly seeing it—and feeling the weight of history in my hands. I could spend an entire day studying it. @TheOpen @RandA @WorldGolfMuseum

We currently have three exclusive SOCIETY designs that honor the rich layers of #GolfHistory, #GolfArt, and #GolfDesign: Victorian (1896) – A celebration of the 1896 US Open Golden Age (1929) – A celebration of the 1929 US Amateur Modern Renovation – Where history meets today’s craft And next? I’m exploring a piece that might be more niche, but deeply meaningful: a patch dedicated to the Lost Seth Raynor Course, reviving two of it’s vanished holes—if only on a hat. What are your thoughts?

Such a joy to be in St Andrews this week. The @dunhilllinks is the best fun, especially in the bars at night with celebs and tour players. Thank you @ToppingsStAs for the signing session earlier. We had a group therapy session to get over the Ryder Cup trauma. I feel much better now!

With any luck the @talkingolf history podcast will be releasing a new episode on Monday: The History of Alexander Findlay one of the golfers who has been called the “Johnny Appleseed of American Golf.” His amazing story has been lost for decades but William Casto’s new book resurrects this golfing legend. A show I know you will enjoy- golfer, inventor, writer, golf course architect, and ambassador for the game.
