Should the KMT lose badly, I will be surprised if Cheng steps down voluntarily. It seems like she's been having fun, and what will she do afterwards if she does step down? I think she'll hold on to the chair position with everything she has. And maybe her new friend will help.

Dare I say it, but it feels like we've reached the point where true believers in the ROC are more aligned with the DPP than the KMT

thenewslens.com/article/2706…

To outsiders, the theory that a recent spike in tree removals in Taipei is a conspiracy to assist PLA navigation of the city may sound crazy. For context: Taipei's mayor has never denounced China's aggression, says Taiwan is a part of China, and meets regularly with the CCP.

“What makes the rise of Puma Shen so significant is that the former uni professor who is an expert on China’s influence efforts in Taiwan has scored almost all his political points on local governance, rather than playing up Chiang and the KMT’s closeness to the CCP.” @heguisen
China has barely been mentioned in this year's Taipei mayoral campaign. But should upstart DPP challenger Puma Shen win, Beijing would lose an important ally in incumbent Chiang Wan-an, who it has likely viewed as a future president it could work with. asia.nikkei.com/opinion/coul…

Taipei has long been a KMT stronghold. Now its mayor, Chiang Wan-an, is trailing the DPP’s Puma Shen by 17 points. @heguisen argues that Shen has turned the race around by focusing on everyday problems, from flooding to rubbish bins, rather than China. Horton has interviewed both men. Chiang cut short their meeting when asked about China and never rescheduled. Shen spent hours explaining Beijing’s disinformation tactics, even drawing diagrams to illustrate them. The stakes go well beyond Taipei. Chiang has cultivated ties with Chinese Communist Party officials, while Shen has spent years exposing Beijing’s influence operations. A Shen victory, Horton writes, would cost Beijing a “trusted friend,” hand Taipei to “one of its sharpest observers” and potentially derail Chiang’s presidential ambitions in 2028. Then again, Chiang refused to explicitly rule out running for either president or vice president in 2028 just yesterday. Seems like an unnecessary self-own at this point.

The coast guard visits and ship transfers are “small in material terms, but they matter as signals,” said Blumenthal. “Regular, visible exchanges normalise cooperation between 2 neighbours that have historically kept their maritime relationship quiet.” 3/3 asia.nikkei.com/politics/int…
