Excellent work by Standard Chartered. Ethena is one of the very few projects that sits at the intersection of all the key secular growth trends in crypto: stablecoin adoption, the insatiable desire to make capital more efficient, the convergence of DeFi and TradFi, tokenization of real-world assets, and the expansion of the perps market to include all those newly tokenized asset classes. Combine that with the cyclical rebound we're seeing in crypto markets broadly speaking and the recent tokenomic changes the team has made to drive value accrual back to the token, one can certainly see the path towards the numbers outlined in this report. Definitely a worthwhile read.
Standard Chartered has initiated research coverage of Ethena. They forecast potential USDe growth of ~8x in the next 2 years as the convergence of DeFi and TradFi accelerates. Unclear why they are so bearish, but worth a read regardless:

🟣 USDe is growing again: how @ethena bounced back after a difficult year Over the past few weeks, several indicators have turned positive again: ◻️ $USDe supply has risen from $3.85 billion to nearly $4.9 billion, an increase of roughly 27% from its low in less than two months. ◻️ The number of holders has grown from around 170,000 to nearly 230,000 in less than a year, reaching a new all-time high. ◻️ Sentiment around $ENA has also shifted. After falling to around $0.07 in late June, the token now trades at approximately $0.22, a gain of roughly 200%. In our view, this recovery rests on four pillars that have taken shape over the past two months and played a central role in Ethena’s growth: ◻️ The return of the basis trade is lifting APYs Ethena’s APY depends directly on how the protocol manages the collateral backing USDe. When the basis trade does not generate sufficient returns, reserves remain in cash. Once it becomes attractive again, Ethena reallocates some of its collateral to the strategy. As basis trading became less profitable, the protocol diversified its revenue sources, including fixed-income and institutional products, as well as lending. With market conditions improving, that allocation is shifting again: the share of collateral allocated to the basis trade has risen from around 1% in June to nearly 20% today. sUSDe’s APY has seen a significant upside because of this. After briefly falling below sUSDS’ APY to 3.55% on June 20, it has climbed almost continuously to reach 5% today. That puts it comfortably above the 4.14% APY on three-month T-bills, which also make up part of Ethena’s reserves. ◻️ Activating the fee switch Another major catalyst: the ENA fee switch proposal passed in early September. The principle is straightforward. A portion of the protocol’s gross revenue will fund ENA buybacks, with the take rate increasing at each USDe supply milestone: 5% at $7.5 billion, 10% at $10 billion, 15% at $15 billion and 20% at $20 billion. Once the mechanism is triggered, 95% of the net revenue paid to the Foundation is to be allocated to ENA buybacks. At OAK Research, as a member of the Risk Committee, we supported this model and helped develop it in collaboration with @BlockworksAdv. We are now working on the next steps and expect to share more content on Ethena soon. With USDe supply approaching $4.9 billion, approximately $2.6 billion separates it from the first threshold. Every new mint therefore brings $ENA a little closer to its first buybacks. ◻️ Yields on Aave are becoming attractive again The turnaround has been particularly striking on Aave. In mid-July, deposits jumped by more than $200 million in just a few days. Today, they stand at nearly $617 million, roughly 210% above their low. There is a clear incentive: supplying USDe on Aave V3 currently earns around 4.85% APY. The outlook is even more promising with USDe’s arrival on Aave V4. Combined with rewards and Ethena Foundation incentives, yields there reach up to 5.39%. For Ethena, this provides a direct way to attract new deposits and grow USDe supply. ◻️ Coinbase, Robinhood and Binance are expanding USDe’s distribution The final driver is the partnerships with Coinbase, Robinhood and Binance, which are now incorporating USDe into their yield products. Ethena is gaining a place within products offered by platforms that reach a much broader audience. On Coinbase and Robinhood, users deposit USDC and USDG, respectively, into Morpho vaults curated by Steakhouse. This liquidity is then lent to borrowers who post collateral, including USDe and sUSDe. For Robinhood Earn’s launch, Steakhouse selected Ethena as one of the primary collateral providers. The product is accessible through a self-custody wallet embedded in the Robinhood app. USDe supply on Robinhood Chain now exceeds $350 million, up 15% over the past month and representing around 40% of the network’s stablecoin supply. On Coinbase, Ethena assets integrated into the DeFi Earn product have reached a record $300 million. And the list keeps growing. Binance Wallet has just added USDe to its Hold to Earn program, offering holders rewards of up to 4.75% APR. In just a few months, Ethena has brought together the ingredients needed to restart its growth. Yields are competitive again with momentum supported by the basis trade, rising deposits on Aave and its partners’ adoption. Meanwhile, the fee switch now directly links USDe’s growth to ENA’s value. After a difficult year, Ethena enters the early stages of this bull market with strong foundations to keep gaining ground in the stablecoin market.

Guy Young’s Bet on the ‘Familiar’ Crypto App That Could Reach 100 Million Users In this episode of When Shift Happens, I sit down with @gdog97_, founder and CEO of @ethena, to discuss how Ethena grew from zero to billions of dollars in under two years, what that experience taught him about building in crypto, and why he now believes one of the industry’s biggest opportunities is surprisingly simple: a dollar that earns yield, inside an app anyone can use. The vision behind @EthenaPay is not to convince millions of people to become crypto users. It is to build a financial product so familiar and useful that they may never need to think about the crypto infrastructure underneath it. The Moment Crypto Started to Feel Different Guy’s interest in crypto began in 2019, when Sid Powell, who later founded Maple Finance, showed him MakerDAO. He remembers putting up ETH, borrowing against it, and realizing that nobody was sitting in the middle approving the transaction. It felt so completely different that he compares it to using an iPhone or ChatGPT for the first time. That experience also sharpened a frustration he already had with fintech. Having previously spent time looking at fintech companies as an investor, Guy felt that many of the first generation of fintech businesses had improved the front end without fundamentally changing what happened underneath. The apps looked better and were easier to use, but they still depended on much of the same banking infrastructure, regulatory machinery, and cost base. DeFi suggested something more radical where a small team could build financial infrastructure capable of moving enormous amounts of money globally without needing its headcount to grow at the same rate. The Users Are Not Coming Onchain Guy points out that despite major developments such as Bitcoin ETFs and growing stablecoin adoption, several measures of onchain activity have not expanded as dramatically as many expected since 2021. That led him to a question: why should the next tens of billions of dollars simply appear onchain and interact with DeFi in the same way existing crypto users do? Most people are not going to download MetaMask, acquire stablecoins, learn how wallets work, and navigate an unfamiliar onchain experience. The industry, in other words, may have been waiting for users to adapt to crypto when crypto needed to adapt to users. Guy increasingly sees DeFi as infrastructure rather than the consumer product itself: “crypto as a more efficient backend for fintech.” That idea sits at the heart of EthenaPay. What EthenaPay Is Really Trying to Build When asked to explain EthenaPay as simply as possible, Guy puts it in one sentence: “It’s just an app where you can save, spend, and send to anyone in the world.” Guy believes that outside of trading platforms, the crypto product with perhaps the largest potential market is a yield-bearing dollar delivered through a mobile experience. People already understand saving money, spending with a card, and sending money to someone else. Crypto does not need to teach them a new behaviour if it can make those existing behaviours better. The ambition is therefore closer to Revolut than to a traditional DeFi application. A user should be able to deposit normal currency, spend normally and move between fiat and stablecoins without feeling as though they have entered an entirely different financial system. The end goal, Guy says, is for somebody to open the app, experience better savings rates, faster transfers and lower fees, and have “no mention of crypto” at all. Owning the Entire Financial Stack There is also a business reason Ethena wants to build the consumer experience itself. Many crypto card and neobank products sit on top of stablecoins and yield infrastructure created by somebody else. Guy argues that this means giving up one of the most valuable parts of the economics. Ethena is attempting to connect the entire stack from stablecoin infrastructure to yield generation and the consumer interface where people save, spend, and send. Owning that relationship also solves another problem Ethena has encountered as it has grown: distribution. Exchanges and other platforms like Binance or Bybit can place Ethena’s products in front of millions of users, but relying entirely on third parties means Ethena never fully owns the customer relationship. EthenaPay is partly an attempt to change that by creating a direct distribution channel to millions of retail users. Going Global Still Means Going Local Crypto may be global by default, but building a mass-market financial product is not. Guy gives the example of Brazil: if a financial app cannot connect with Pix, the payment system people already use, it is effectively a non-starter. EthenaPay is initially focusing on roughly 20 markets, with particular interest in places where access to dollars has real everyday value. Guy draws a lesson from Tether’s growth, arguing that some of the greatest demand for dollar-based products exists outside the United States, particularly in emerging markets where local financial infrastructure or currencies may be less attractive. The strategy is global, but the execution is intensely local because payment rails, banking integrations, currencies, and user behaviour all differ from market to market. And rather than trying to acquire everyone immediately, Guy returns to an old-fashioned startup principle: find the first hundred people who genuinely love the product and let them become its advocates. Trust Is Something You Survive Into There is an important lesson in offering people higher yields on their money: the better the number looks, the more people may wonder what risk sits behind it. Ethena has dealt with that skepticism from the beginning, including comparisons with failed crypto projects and periods of intense FUD. Guy’s response to the trust problem is: “There’s a huge amount of value for just existing for a long period of time without messing up.” There is no marketing shortcut or equivalent for that. Financial products earn trust by operating through difficult markets, protecting users and surviving multiple cycles. That lesson has also shaped how Guy thinks about Ethena itself. After a period of rapid growth and experimentation, he acknowledges the danger of becoming distracted by side projects while the core business still needs attention. His philosophy now is simple: do one thing extremely well first. EthenaPay is a major new bet, but it is ultimately connected to the same mission as USDe: getting Ethena’s dollar product into the hands of more people. The bigger question is whether those people will think of themselves as crypto users at all. If Guy is right, they may simply open an app, save their money, earn a better return, spend it, and send it around the world. And somewhere underneath all of that, crypto will be doing the work invisibly. 👉If you enjoyed reading the summary, head over to When Shift Happens on YouTube or your favorite podcast platform to access the full convo.

The Fee Switch vote has passed, with 100% of votes in favour. The fee switch milestones are now activated and programmatic ENA buybacks will begin and scale higher as metrics and milestones are reached. Snapshot vote results linked in tweet below:
We are excited to announce four updates regarding the Ethena ecosystem, further details on each point are provided in the blog linked below: 1. Buyout of early investors: The Ethena Foundation executed a buyout of all locked tokens from certain major seed investors that sold any ENA within the last 9 months. 2. Alignment of Token & Equity: The Ethena Foundation and Ethena Labs have reached agreement on a Master Framework Agreement, whereby IP and ownership of value accrued by the protocol is assigned to the Foundation exclusively and governed by token holders with no residual cash flow due to equity investors in the Labs entity. 3. Revenue Buybacks: Governance proposal now live for the implementation of the fee switch whereby net revenue accrued across all business lines under the Ethena brand will be used to programmatically buy back the ENA token. The vote for revenue buyback fee switch implementation is now here, and has already been approved by the Risk Committee: snapshot.box/#/s:ethenagover… 4. Removal of monthly VC unlocks: The Ethena Foundation and lead investors have agreed to eliminate future overhang associated with monthly VC investor unlocks by releasing unvested tokens. All team tokens remain locked per the original vesting schedules. Further details and documentation is provided in the blog linked below:

E184: @ethena CEO - Why @EthenaPay Feels Like Revolut, Not MetaMask @gdog97_ is the founder and CEO of Ethena. He stumbled into DeFi in 2019 when a friend showed him MakerDAO - taking out a $5,000 loan against $10,000 of ETH with no one standing in the middle of the transaction. $ENA has got back on my radar recently. Not really because of one catalyst, but a few things are starting to connect in a way that makes @ethena much more interesting to me again. Sharing my $ENA thesis below. 1/ First is the yield side. USDe supply is now much lower than the peak while leverage across crypto has also been flushed pretty hard. Normally you would think this is bad for Ethena because less leverage means lower funding rates and therefore less yield. But I think the setup from here is actually quite interesting. With less USDe supply competing for the same basis trades, any recovery in funding should translate into much better economics per dollar of USDe. At the same time Ethena itself is trying to expand beyond crypto basis trades. Their recent piece on extending the basis trade to equities perps is probably the most interesting example. The idea is basically to expand the pool of assets where Ethena can harvest the spread between spot and derivatives instead of depending mainly on BTC and ETH perpetual funding. So the yield engine is slowly getting broader exactly when crypto leverage is relatively low. If leverage comes back later, that's upside rather than something Ethena needs to survive. 2/ Then there is "Ethena Pay". This is probably the part I like the most. Ethena is no longer just building the dollar and hoping other apps distribute it. They are starting to own the distribution themselves. You can now keep money in Ethena Pay earning around 5% on the Standard tier, then spend directly through the card and get 4% cashback on the first $2.5k of monthly spend. For crypto users those numbers are already attractive, but the bigger point is what it does to USDe. Everyday spending becomes another distribution channel for the stablecoin. Someone doesn't necessarily need to understand basis trades, loop sUSDe on Aave or even care about DeFi anymore. If the product is good enough, they can simply keep dollars there because the balance earns and the same balance can be spent normally. That is a much healthier type of demand than relying purely on leverage farmers. And it feeds directly into the part of the $ENA thesis I think the market is only starting to price: 3/ The fee switch. Ethena proposed a new framework where ENA buybacks scale together with USDe supply. The first threshold is a 14-day average USDe supply of $7.5B, where 5% of protocol revenue starts being captured for buybacks. Then: $10B USDe → 10% $15B → 15% $20B → 20% Ethena also said that once the first threshold is reached, 95% of the net revenue flowing to the Foundation from its three core businesses will be used for ENA buybacks. Those businesses are USDe savings, white-label stablecoins and a third product Ethena teased as "[X]" right before Ethena Pay launched. So this is where Pay becomes especially interesting to me. Even ignoring whatever direct card economics Ethena eventually earns, Pay can grow the amount of USDe sitting inside the ecosystem. More balances in Ethena Pay = more USDe demand. More USDe = more backing assets for Ethena to generate revenue on. More revenue + higher USDe supply = eventually more dollars flowing into ENA buybacks. That's a much cleaner flywheel than the old version of the Ethena trade. And the scale can actually become meaningful. The Risk Committee backtested the proposed mechanism across 705 days of Ethena data. At a 6% protocol APY, they estimate the annualized buyback capacity at roughly: $7.5B USDe → $22.5M $10B → $60M $15B → $135M $20B → $240M Obviously those numbers aren't guaranteed. Revenue changes with market conditions and the $15B/$20B levels haven't been tested historically. But it finally gives $ENA a pretty simple way to think about value accrual: USDe grows → Ethena earns more → part of that revenue buys ENA. Then comes the part I'm probably most interested in trading around. 4/ October 5. Ethena decided to accelerate the remaining investor vesting and unlock basically the whole remaining investor allocation in one shot. Roughly 1.4B $ENA hits the circulating supply, around 14% of current supply. That's obviously a huge unlock. But instead of looking at it purely as 1.4B tokens coming to market, I'm looking at what happens after it. Without the acceleration, investors would have continued receiving tokens every month until 2028. Now that entire overhang gets compressed into one event. So October 5 could become the final major investor supply reset. I'm not assuming unlock day = bottom and straight up from there. There can obviously be selling before and after the unlock. But once the market absorbs it, one of the biggest structural reasons to constantly discount $ENA disappears 17 months earlier than expected. That's the setup I'm looking for. My play is basically to see how badly the market prices the October unlock, then look for the point where everyone is still focused on the supply shock while the recurring investor overhang is already gone and the new Ethena flywheel is starting to show up in the numbers. This time Ethena can potentially grow with less leverage and much more organic demand. That's why $ENA is back on my radar.
