What does peace look like for someone forced to flee? It means being able to return home, live in safety and rebuild a future. A timely reminder from High Commissioner @‌BarhamSalih. #ExCom

When funding falls below a critical point, protection doesn't just weaken. It stops. Nearly 8.3 million people risk losing the @Refugees support they rely on this year. Flexible, predictable funding is how we hold the line.

Deeply concerned by the escalating conflict in Yemen, which has displaced an estimated 50,000 people in recent days. Families are fleeing violence, many for the second or third time. Civilians must be protected, humanitarian access ensured, and international support urgently increased to help those affected.

On World Humanitarian Day, earlier this week, we looked back at the legacy of Sadako Ogata, the first woman to serve as UN High Commissioner for @Refugees. Her pioneering work continues to resonate with humanitarian workers serving people in crisis today. #ActForHumanity

75 years on, the Refugee Convention remains as relevant as ever. Protecting refugees and maintaining secure, orderly asylum systems go hand in hand. Read the latest from High Commissioner @BarhamSalih in @TheEconomist on why both matter. economist.com/by-invitation/…

75 years ago, the world made a promise to people forced to flee. Nobel Laureate @NadiaMuradBasee spoke about the space where that promise lives, and the continued action needed so everyone forced to flee can find safety and protection.

When a crisis strikes, UNHCR is there. With a global stockpile that can deliver immediate humanitarian aid for up to one million people, we can reach anywhere in the world within 72 hours. This is how we save lives.

Afghanistan is at a critical moment. More than 6 million Afghans have returned since 2023, placing immense pressure on communities already struggling with humanitarian and development challenges. I am here with UNDP Administrator @alexanderdecroo, meeting returnees, host communities, women and girls, and witnessing firsthand both the challenges and the resilience of the Afghan people. Rebuilding Afghanistan’s future requires stability, inclusion and the contributions of all its people. Expanding opportunities for women and girls is not only a matter of rights—it is essential for stability, prosperity and resilience. It is also one of the strongest safeguards against poverty, exclusion and extremism. The international community must not look away. Humanitarian aid remains indispensable, but it is not enough. We must also invest in protection, livelihoods, basic services and opportunities that help returnees rebuild their lives, strengthen communities, and contribute to a more stable and hopeful future for Afghanistan.

I am angry. In Busuma, 54,000+ refugees, mostly women and children, are surviving with too little food, water & shelter. They are not able to meet their basic needs. The capacity to fix this exists. What’s missing is the will. That is unacceptable, and it is on all of us.

In Lampedusa, Pope Leo XIV called for respect for the dignity of every person. Europe is capable of addressing the crisis, integrating relief efforts into a long term plan, protecting and integrating while assisting developing countries so no one is forced to emigrate.

Emergencies don't wait. Neither does aid. From Panama, 20 metric tons of humanitarian aid set out for Venezuela to support families affected by the earthquakes. Emergency shelters, hygiene kits, mosquito nets, lighting, and other essential items are on their way to reach those who need them most as quickly as possible. When every hour counts, a rapid response can make all the difference. unh.cr/MixNSx

For millions of refugees, displacement is no longer temporary—it has become a life of waiting. Ethiopia’s Makatet Roadmap offers a different vision: seeing refugees as people with skills, aspirations, and potential. This is how we move from managing displacement to resolving it.

Honored to meet @ArchbishopSarah at a time of ongoing forced displacement and polarised debate. Faith leadership is key to advancing dignity and action. As we mark 75 years of the 1951 Convention, we must work together on safety and solutions for refugees to rebuild their lives.
