Amazing addendum - the iPhone Duo behaves correctly in split screen! Can interact with a secondary app while preserving presenter mode.

I have a piece in the Globe today about AI and higher ed. TL;DR we spend a lot of time thinking about *how* to teach differently (assessments, cheating) and not enough about *what* to teach differently (reevaluating our learning objectives). bostonglobe.com/2026/09/23/o…

PSA for teachers: If you use an iPad to present (eg PowerPoint or GoodNotes) while multitasking with other apps, don’t update to iPadOS 27! Tapping on a different window during a presentation will switch the projection to your iPad screen instead of the presentation.

The problem with AI detectors in my view is not false positives/negatives. It’s that they measure something that we think we care about but actually don’t. Textbook streetlight effect.

What I hate the most about Apple Watches ambiently recording all your conversations is that Apple has been (correctly) lauded for making features to help people with hearing or vision loss, and they're just taking that technology and dissolving the concept of communal privacy

I had a blast on this one! Always love talking to David and really cool to know @stephenrobles
🔋 New Mac Power Users is out! We spoke to Teddy Svoronos, Harvard Professor about AI in school, how PowerPoint overtook Keynote, and how AI is affecting students' ability to brainstorm This is a *really* good one Apple: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas… YT: youtube.com/watch?v=CGZ2EhB4…

Worth remembering that the single most common AI interaction people have is through Google AI overviews, and they’re still not great mikecaulfield.substack.com/p…

I concur with everyone else that the new reports from OpenAI and METR are bonkers. But I think the most important takeaway from these reports is that OpenAI seems to be so obviously backburning. Predictably but conveniently, these reports were exclusively about the factual sequence of events. Neither of these reports had information about the likely negligent decision-making going on inside of OpenAI at the time. The information in these reports is needed, but it's not coming close to everything that is needed right now. The torch now passes to Attorneys General's offices to use their investigative powers. Glad that Alabama took the lead on this a few days ago. alabamaag.gov/wp-content/upl…

I always love reading @tedsvo when he writes about his teaching. A really honest, reflective piece here on how he changes things in the age of AI: tedsvo.substack.com/p/puttin…

Worth noting the agentic loop part. We did NOT just write a nice prompt - there was a loop assessing the appropriateness and difficulty of candidate questions. Newer models might be able to one shot this, but that’s not what’s in the paper.
o3-mini (very obsolete) in an agentic loop made good exam questions: "In one of the largest field studies of AI-generated questions to date, we found that this approach achieves psychometric properties on par with those of questions appearing on high-stakes standardized tests."

An update on what I'm changing for my intro stats Fall course for MPPs. TL;DR work at home is for learning, work in person is for assessing. Front-loading development of statistical intuition and domain expertise, followed by facility with AI tools. tedsvo.substack.com/p/puttin…

A fun conversation, and please do check out the (free!) module on using data as a city leader!
AI is transforming city government, but successful adoption starts long before implementation. In the latest @DataSmartCities podcast, @GoldsmithOnGov sits down with @Kennedy_School's @tedsvo to talk about what city leaders need to know about Agentic AI, why smaller teams work better than broad rollouts, and the skills leaders actually need to manage this new relationship with AI tools. One takeaway from their conversation: city leaders don't need to be data scientists, but they do need to know the right questions to ask at the right times. Want to build those skills? Explore @BHcityleaders' free online learning module Goldsmith and Svoronos discuss in the episode, Using Data and Evidence as a City Leader. It's designed to help public leaders become more confident consumers and commissioners of data and evidence. 💻 Start the module: bit.ly/4eczIaa 🎧 And listen to the episode: bit.ly/449x7Ia

Too generous, but please do check it out!
If you care about AI*teaching, you really must follow @tedsvo. Just do it. If I had only one source, it'd be him. Ruthlessly curious, aggressive, and competent about student learning AND AI, his clock speed is FAST. Exhibit #10482, but just tune in! tedsvo.substack.com/p/notes-…
