Remembering Prof Jeff Grey who sadly died 10 years ago today. Seen here at 1999 Australian Defence Force Academy UNSW Canberra graduation and afterwards we had a lovely dinner and an opportunity to thank him and Peter Dennis for their finest pastoral care of a Kiwi PhD. RIP JGG🍷

The >80% of casualties caused by UAS figure can lead to the wrong conclusions. Russia was forced to adopt a less effective tactic (infiltration) to minimize the losses caused by artillery. It doesn’t make sense to fire artillery at 1-2 soldiers, so FPVs will dominate. But the threat of artillery is still important and artillery would likely be the main casualty producing weapon at the beginning of another conventional land war.

During the first North Korean assaults in Kursk oblast, Russia sent up a significant number of ISR UAS. Ukrainian artillery were essentially suppressed by the persistent ISR presence, so the Ukrainian infantry and SSO had to fight with mortars, FPVs, and HMGs. The North Koreans had success against the outnumbered Ukrainian units and pushed them back while operating in company-battalion size elements. When Ukrainian artillery and HIMARS began to operate a grew days later, the North Koreans took heavy losses and began to operate in smaller elements. ISR + artillery (especially with DPICM) is the most effective way to counter infantry.
This is exactly why the Ukrainian MOD stopped procuring 40 Bohdana-family howitzers per month under Federov... Oh wait, they did not do that and are still buying 40 howitzers per month. To quote @RALee85 and @kriegsforscherD from a recent podcast they did for UkraineMilitaryHistory on YT. One of the reasons Russia switched to infiltration tactics from platoon-company-level assaults was the ever-present threat of Ukrainian artillery. Splitting these assaults into 2-3-man infiltration groups made it an unappealing target for artillery fire missions. FPV drones then took up this niche of hunting down these small groups. Assaults by larger formations are, meanwhile, more resistant to the FPV threat, as a UAV formation can only deploy so many of them at the same time before running out of available pilots or control channels. The second being much more prevalent on the border between the AOs of two different units. One can, for example, look at Avdiivka as an example of this, where the FPVs were able to attrit Russian assault columns but were unable to actually halt them due to the problems listed above in combination with a non-existent supply situation. It would be the employment of drone-corrected artillery fire that actually halted those assaults.

Quite remarkable to see a senior 🇮🇩 military officer answer a question about what would happen if there’s a blockade over Taiwan 👇🏻 Discussion during a special session on littoral security at the 23rd IISS Shangri-La Dialogue a few weeks ago, video and text: iiss.org/events/shangri-la-d…

Nice touch that I think the first person to out their real identities was…John Safran, when they performed on music jamboree
There’s something very funny about suddenly being offended about a band that has been performing since 1982.

I know ‘Where It All Went Wrong’ isn’t intended to be a serious piece of scholarly writing but still: the decision to go to war, taken in March, sent protestors into the streets in February. That is a super easy fix by inserting ‘prospective’ and making the verb pluperfect

Footage of an F-8J piloted by Cdr. A.L. Alexander of VG-51 losing starboard gear and a couple of Sidewinders popping loose while landing on the USS Bon Homme Richard from May 8, '68 or '69 (cleaned audio a bit). I have a few clips of F-8's with gear issues while landing.🤔
