not a web dev and gamedev is diff but i came to despise wsl2. you have to be soo good at linux to avoid the issues that you might as well use normal linux and have less linux problems. 1) GUI+SystemD breaks on non-canonical ubuntu. 2 year old bug. not fixed. most answers are about using an x11 server on windows with xserv, but now wsl2 uses wslg so that doesn't work. Small community so most questions dont get answered, probably because the smart people already realized its shit and left. Sometimes just system D stuff like docker wouldn't work. had to restart wsl a lot. made it easier to do a "local" test on my server for coolify rather than actually locally. 2) Cant mix windows and wsl. I/O is horrible and half the stuff just doesn't work without weird workarounds. Testing expo on android on windows thru wsl wasted a good bit of time but couldn't get the emulator to open on wsl. port forwarding between windows to wsl for this and to ssh broke my brain. normally cursor would fix it so i can use my local webbrowser to see stuff running on server, but x11 forwarding wouldn't work. never got remote vscode/cursor to work. 3) VHD is pay2win. unless you pay for pro? enterprise? W10 you just dont get commands to easily shrink your VHD, which is bad because they dont automatically shrink and shrinking drive D by manually going into it would need drive C to be nearly empty. had to uninstall everything after i spent a day downloading and deleting AI models because my vhd ballooned and destroyed the windows part. 4) Building anything other than web stuff is terribly broken. Unity would let me press play button to test in editor (if i disabled system D) but half the time i couldn't build an exe. Pyinstaller almost never worked but probably a skill issue. Cant just build and run a linu x build because of the WSLg issues. made testing multiplayer stuff aids. This was also a problem on the Ubuntu one when i tried, and it took an 20mins to move over like 10gb project cuz it has a lotta small files. 5) Slow terminal. After a few hours opening terminal is very slow, sometimes. Only sometimes. powershell stayed instant. pc would be at like 5% usage and im just sitting there for 10-15s. once it took 40s. couldn't figure out why. all the LLMs and reddit posts blamed things that i didn't use like x11 again. 6) They actually still work on Windows, whereas WSL2 hasn't even had many bug fixes. new powershell functionality made raw windows kinda have a nice lil package manager and most things worked. except discord and Unity Hub. 0 evidence but i think they must have fired the people working on it during their big layoffs. both it and Edge have rapidly degraded over the last 2 years, even the Copilot part. probably one of the 5 people to ever pay for it and it never got fixed lmao. even theo fixed latex in like a week. still cant paste screenshots from clipboard (been 3 months broken). i finally ragequit and got a skirt, some thighhighs, and installed real arch. now my lockscreen keeps breaking everything but atleast fzf doesn't show me advertisements for mobile games when i try to search for stuff.
