The press isn't the problem. Your hurry is.
The ball drops through the net and somebody grabs it and throws it in before anyone has reached a spot. The receiver catches it on the baseline with his back to the basket, and he's trapped. The spacing is gone because nobody had time to build it.
You didn't get pressed. You helped.
The fix is almost too simple: Don't pick up the ball until the count starts. Use those seconds. Get your players to their spots, remind them who goes where, and then inbound.
Yes, the defense gets set up. So do you. And only one of you used the time on purpose.
Against pressure, the first pass isn't the fast one. It's the prepared one.

My dad had a line he repeated my whole childhood: "You should never be outworked or out-prepared."
There will always be people smarter than you and more talented than you.
But you control the effort and the prep.

From midseason questions about his play to widespread belief that he wouldn’t return to St. John’s, Ian Jackson has answered it all with patience and maturity. He embraced an unfamiliar role last season, never wavered in his commitment, and continued to grow both on and off the court.
Now, the soon-to-be St. John’s captain enters his junior season with a renewed level of confidence and preparation—and looks poised for a breakout year.

Just had a student-athlete receive his second college scholarship offer.
Our head coach spoke with the college coach, and these were the questions they asked:
• How is his home life?
• How are his academics?
• How is he in the weight room?
• Is he coachable?
• Does he pick up on concepts?
• Are his parents a problem?
• Is he a complainer?
• Does he run track?
• What is his legitimate size?
Not one question about his stats.
Not a single one.
College coaches are evaluating the whole person.
Character. Family. Academics. Work ethic. Coachability. Football IQ. Physical development. Attitude.
The scoreboard matters. The film matters. The production matters.
But when a college coach is deciding whether they want to invest in a young man for the next four years, who he is matters just as much as what he does on Friday night.
That’s why we talk so much about building the person, not just the player.
The game may get you noticed. Your character determines what happens next.
