The virus causing polio was discovered in 1908 by Karl Landsteiner and Erwin Popper. Landsteiner was later awarded a Nobel Prize for another discovery, that of human blood groups. Today polio is almost eradicated thanks to a safe and effective vaccine. #endpolio

đź”´ Day 1,856 since secondary age girls were stopped from going to school in #Afghanistan. The Taliban has forbidden young girls from entering classrooms - and their social exclusion continues beyond these spaces as well. This is not right or fair. It has been more than five years. "A welfare check on a quiet street turned into something Sheriff Daniel Hayes will never forget. Neighbors hadn't seen the young mother at 214 Willow Lane for two days. They told dispatch a baby had been crying on and off, then suddenly everything went silent. Silence was what worried them most. Hayes, a 20-year veteran, arrived expecting a routine knock and a tired parent who simply hadn't answered the door. He knocked hard and announced himself. No movement. No sound. He forced the door open and stepped inside, calling out as he moved down the hallway. The air felt heavy. A faint smell of heat and stillness hung in the rooms. In the back bedroom, he found a baby girl lying in her crib. She was weak and dehydrated, but her eyes were open. When she saw him, she didn't cry. She just stared. "You've been around a long time, haven't you?" he said softly as he moved closer. In the next room, he found her mother. She had passed away in her sleep from a sudden medical event. Later reports estimated she had been gone for at least 36 hours. The baby had been alone the entire time. Training took over first. Hayes checked her breathing and pulse, then called for medical assistance. After that, he carried her outside to the front porch, away from the scene inside. He lowered himself into an old wooden chair and held her carefully against his chest. "It's alright," he murmured. "I'm here now. You're not alone right now." The child's small fingers wrapped weakly around his shirt. Her head rested under his chin as he waited for the ambulance. "You held on so long," he whispered. "We're going to get you warm. We're going to." His partner captured the moment from a distance. The photo shows a seasoned sheriff sitting on a porch, cradling a baby as tears fall down his face. Years of experience hadn't prepared him for the weight of that afternoon. The girl, later named Lily, recovered at the hospital. Hayes and his wife opened their home to her while relatives were located. When her grandparents were finally found, the handoff was quiet and full of emotion. Now she visits every month. The uniform that carried her out of that house is no longer just a symbol of authority to her family. Some calls end when the report is filed. Others change a life long after the sirens fade.

We know that culture change programmes can create the conditions for health & care organisations to be more “change ready”, but what does it take for a culture change programme to become the way we work organisation-wide? Natalie Wilson & colleagues have published a scoping review in @JBI_EI on embedding organisation-wide culture change programmes in health & care. They screened 7,922 studies but only included 17. One is a review I co-authored with Cynthia Willis & colleagues in 2016, so I read this with particular interest. The authors separate 3 phases. “Implementing” gets interventions into practice. “Sustaining” keeps the programme & its outcomes going, usually 2 to 6 years after implementation. They also describe a middle phase, “embedding”, when change becomes part of the everyday routines of individuals & teams & part of organisational systems. The evidence for “embedding is particularly lacking. 10 factors emerged. “Education & training” & “measurement, monitoring & feedback of outcomes” appeared in every study. “Processes & structures”, “leadership”, “resources” & “cultural alignment” appeared in 16. “Shared, defined accountability” in 15. “An adaptable programme” in 11, “stakeholder engagement” in 8, “alignment with the external environment” in 7. There is a tension in the design of culture change interventions. Should we initiate a programme that seeks to change culture "directly" through values, attitudes & messages? Or should we seek to change culture "indirectly" by redesigning the daily work, norms of collaboration & routines? It doesn’t say so explicitly, but the conclusions of this article are in the latter camp (as am I generally). Five implications for leaders of change: 1) Build the change into daily work: Integrating new practices into existing tasks & duties, aligning them with current processes & accounting for the effect on workload. 2) Write it into the organisation’s routines. Reporting systems, governance, people processes, policies & monitoring are where a programme becomes business as usual. 7 studies pointed to defining roles & responsibilities in organisational policy. 3) Support embedding as its own phase. 9 studies named a dedicated budget as a key factor, alongside people & time to do the work. 4) Put new practices into induction & refresher training, so it survives turnover of people. 5) Share leadership across professions & levels, keep it steady & feed outcomes back so people see what the change achieves. This review shows us how thin the evidence base on organisation-wide culture change interventions in health & care is. All 9 empirical studies focused on nursing. Patients took part in 2. Administrative & corporate colleagues are missing from the research. Culture appears as both the goal & a condition for success. The studies measured whether the programme became embedded, not whether the culture shifted. This knowledge is much needed & there is work to do. Link: ovid.com/jnls/ijebh/fulltext….

🤝🩵 This month, we celebrate the Power of Care, one of nursing's seven powers. The power of nurses’ ability to deliver person-centred and primary health care is both a clinical and a systemic advantage. When care is organized around the whole person, patients are better supported, resources are used more effectively, and trust in the health system strengthens. 📖 Read our #IND2026 report to learn more: bit.ly/4dxRkwv #OurNursesOurFuture | Empowered Nurses Save Lives
