"Inspirational quotes don't count as your own thoughts, no matter how hard they make you feel." - Someone super smart and famous.
Out of curiosity, does any Canadian institution plan to look into the fact conservative media organizations bought up all local media (newspapers, tv, and radio) to ensure that pov is the only one available outside of major cities and the effect it’s having on our elections?
So, there’s not alot of motivation to change the status quo. But it might be worth considering that the world and media landscape have changed dramatically since 2015 before Canada is the next nation to fall under the control of an international right wing populist movement.
RIP Gene Hackman. One of the greats. I miss actors who looked like real people and lived actual lives. It would be nice if contemporary filmmakers could make an effort to find the next Gene Hackman instead of casting yet another Instagram model with a plastic personality.
Fine, I’ll watch Emilia Perez and The Brutalist. But I won’t be happy about it and will watch both films through a haze of resentment and annoyance. Just like all middlebrow Oscar bait deserves.
I’m feeling pretty devastated about the loss of David Lynch. Not many artists dig so deep into their subconscious that they seem to unlock another dimension. Not many people make being a weirdo feel so effortlessly cool. A legendary filmmaker and an irreplaceable human. RIP
Big shout out to the Canadian feds and my boy JT for the GST break today. I used to be sad about the fact that I’ll never own a house and probably won’t be able to retire. But now that I’ll be saving $15-$20 over the next few weeks, it really doesn’t bother me anymore.
The saddest part is that this is really going to hurt the legacy of that incredible movie she made about their love.
Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are divorcing after nearly two years of marriage. Lopez filed on Tuesday, Aug. 20, in an L.A. County Superior Court. The official separation date is listed as April 26. variety.com/2024/film/news/j…
RIP Martin Mull. He was quietly one of the funniest guys around. Fernwood Tonight and The History Of White People In America were decades ahead of their time. He should have been more widely appreciated, but was content to stay in his own weird little world. You gotta respect it.
This is horseshit. The Revue has been easily the best rep cinema in Toronto for years and it would be a huge loss for it to disappear. Why do landlords have so much power again? What value do they contribute to our culture and communities?
Currently seated behind two Swifties blasting their lord and saviour on a phone while singing along at full volume. A few weeks ago, I was on different a bus when a grown man shat himself and trapped everyone else in with the stank. This is worse.
It’s going to be amazing when Netflix and other streamers just pull right out of Canada due to this C-11 nonsense and we can’t access them much like how we can’t see national news organizations on Google (or access Google’s latest search tech). Brilliant decision making.
It would be different if any other country made these same demands, but they don’t. Maybe Canadian arts/media can’t attract audiences and desperately needs additional funding because our arts industry is dependent on the government financing and approval?
It’s National Canadian Film Day! If you live in one of the five cities across the country that actually screens Canadian movies and today falls within the 2 week window that those films play in mostly empty theatres before disappearing, then go buy a ticket and celebrate!
Grateful that the Canadian government is developing new ways for my generation to incur debt to buy increasingly shitty housing rather than working on affordable housing, rental caps, or investigating the international money laundering operations that exploit our housing market.
