The expensive part of AI isn’t generation. It’s the handoff. Someone prompts a deck. They don’t read it. They send it upstairs. Now the next person has two jobs: understand the recommendation and finish the thinking the first person skipped. That’s a slop grenade. A draft is allowed to be messy. A handoff has to be owned. Before you send anything this week, say out loud: “I recommend ___ because ___. I checked ___. The decision I need is ___.” If you can’t finish the sentence, you don’t have a deliverable. You have a first pass with better typography.

“Make it premium” is not a brief. It’s how slop gets a permission slip. A brief a model cannot ignore has four parts: Who it’s for (one person, not a segment poem) What it has to make them do What it is not allowed to look like What proof has to be on screen Example: Bad: Make the product feel premium and innovative. Better: A plant manager who has been burned by pretty software. Show the line, the downtime number, a real hand on the interface. No marble. No purple glow. No smiling stock operators. The tool will fill whatever you leave empty. Empty briefs fill with house style.

A homepage doesn’t fail because AI touched it. It fails because nobody wrote an enemy into the brief. “We’re the modern platform for teams that want to move faster” is not a position. It’s the default sentence the model reaches for when you didn’t give it a fight. Cover the logo. If you still know who it is, you have a brand. If you don’t, you have a template with better lighting. This week, look at your hero. If a competitor could run the same line tomorrow, kill the line before you generate another version.

I can usually spot undirected AI work in seconds. Not because it’s ugly. Because it’s unowned. Five tells: The layout could be any brand in the category. The headline explains the product instead of taking a side. The people look expensive and nobody specific. Color is a vibe, not a rule. There is no enemy in the brief — only adjectives. Premium. Seamless. Elevated. Ugly can be distinctive. Unowned never is.

Most teams don’t have an AI problem. They have a direction problem. The generator will give you 40 versions by lunch. Nobody is paid to pick one and kill the rest. That’s the job. I work as a fractional creative director for teams that want human judgment on top of AI speed. If your site, campaign, or deck could belong to any brand in your category, reply SLOP. I’ll tell you whether a teardown is worth it.
