Day 4 #SASWeek26 is focused of SAS advocacy and advocacy structures. SAS Tutors and SAS advocates in Trusts and Boards are crucial to these structures. Do you know if your organisation has them, and who they are?
Today #SASWeek26 is all about advocacy and wellbeing of SAS doctors and dentists. Use our poster to understand the difference between the SAS advocate and SAS tutor roles. bit.ly/4hXwokU @BMA_SAS @NHSEngland @NHSE_WTE

Day 3 of #SASWeek26 - Leadership opportunities and the celebration of Leaders who are SAS doctors. Are your leadership adverts open to all your substantive doctors ( consultants and SAS)? Are you developing SAS as leaders? Are you appointing leaders from this background?

Today's #SASWeek26 theme is Specialists. Most SAS doctors aim to progress within the SAS grade to Specialist. Transparent processes on how this can be achieved are needed. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿lead the way. #SASsix

Incredibly proud to have received award but it doesn’t feel like mine alone. Because we should ALL be proud - of choosing a path that works for us. - of building careers around patients, expertise and service. The SAS route is NOT a second choice. #SASbychoice #sasweek
It's #SASWeek! 🌟 What better way to start the week than celebrating our SAS Award NI winners! All winners were presented their awards by Prof Sir Michael McBride, Chief Medical Officer for NI. Celebrate their success with us!👏 #SASNi #NIMDTA #SASAwardsNI

It's SAS week, so here's to SAS doctors! SAS Week is led by the BMA in partnership with NHS Employers, and I want to use it to celebrate a group of doctors who form a core part of the NHS. Teaching SAS doctors is some of the work I'm proudest of at Doctors Training. I always come away struck by the experience, skill and commitment in the room. Here are three things about being a SAS doctor that I wish more doctors knew: 1. A SAS career is a positive choice There's still a narrative that a CCT is the only real measure of a doctor's worth, but it isn't. More and more doctors are choosing SAS roles because they offer control over their clinical work and room to build careers in education, research and leadership. 2. The expertise of the SAS workforce is enormous A specialty doctor might be three years postgraduate, but a specialist or associate specialist might be thirty. Many international medical graduates worked as autonomous practitioners before they came to the UK. As a consultant, it was only when I worked with SAS doctors across different organisations that I really appreciated the depth of that expertise. When we take the time to understand what colleagues bring, patients get the best of it. 3. There are new routes to recognition The SAS Eligibility and Permanency Framework, published by NHS Employers in June 2026, gives locally employed doctors who have done SAS-level work for two years or more a route off rolling local contracts and onto permanent, national SAS terms. Experience gained overseas counts too, where doctors can evidence equivalent competencies. Alongside the GMC's Portfolio Pathway, which opened up a broader route to specialist registration in 2024, that's real progress in recognising what these doctors bring. To every SAS doctor: thank you. For your expertise, your leadership and the care you give patients every day. Know a SAS doctor who deserves to be celebrated this week? Tag them in the comments and tell them why. I've also shared some of our Why Medics Matter episodes for SAS doctors in the comments. They're well worth a listen, whether you're a SAS doctor yourself, or whether you work with them. #SASWeek26

A fantastic example of the expertise, leadership and dedication SAS doctors and dentists bring to the NHS. Congratulations to Ushmita on this well-deserved recognition and thank you for everything you do to support patients, colleagues and the wider profession. 👏 #SASWeek26
Congratulations to Ushmita, who is currently one of our North East Regional Reps, for winning the North East Regional SAS Dentist Award! Take a moment to read the lovely words her nominating tutor had to say about her ⬇️ "I proudly nominate Ushmita Johar for the SAS award. Over a distinguished 25-year career in Oral Surgery spanning both India and the Uk, and including 14 years at JCUH, Ushmita has proven to be a valuable member of the team. Ushmita combines expert clinical care with a deep passion for education. She routinely delivers hands-on dentoalveolar skills training to OMFS registrars, junior SAS doctors, and dental core trainees. She is a trusted clinical supervisor and has been an educational supervisor for the last 4 years or dental core trainees. Ushmita serves as the North East Regional representative for the British Association of Oral Surgeons (BAOS), elevating the speciality by organising national webinars. Furthermore, Ushmita plays a vital operational role within the department by managing the complex rota for junior doctors and mid-grade staff, which is critically important for the smooth functioning of the department. She drives staff cohesion by organizing trust-wide SAS social evenings and departmental outings. Grounded by her passion for global travel, culture, and cuisine, Ushmita brings an open-minded, adaptable, and rich perspective to both patient care and colleague relationships."'
