Fresco crosses in the cross-shaped crypt of the former Chalkoprateia Church (now Lala Hayrettin Camii), once famous for its relics of the Virgin Mary's girdle This 5th-century basilica was largely destroyed in the 18th century when it was functioning as Lala Hayrettin Mosque. Its apse was then reconstructed to function as a smaller mosque. While much was now lost, it was built shortly after the construction of the City’s oldest church Stoudios. The name Chalkoprateia is derived from the coppersmith of the Jewish quarter originally located here. Plan from Kleiss. Photos from today’s visit with Şerif Yenen @serifyenen
