yes, it's interesting: the more you read of experimental literature, the less emotionally engaged you are; reading the Naturalists, with their (somewhat) plodding monochromatic prose, you can see that this is "real life" in its aching banality as, for all its stylistic bravado, novels like "Lolita" & "Pale Fire" are performative & dazzling.
Replying to @JoyceCarolOates
I love the naturalists. They were messy but real. Nabokov was great, but writers like him prioritized style over story. Sometimes that gets out of hand. Story matters.

Biological essentialist arguments concerning the reading habits of men and women make me especially sad because they ignore the power of what Virginia Woolf calls the "androgynous mind," and the freedom that creativity offers both men and women in its transcendence of gender.

Looking forward to talking about male friendship next Saturday - a subject almost as close to my heart as female friendship, as celebrated in The Three Graces! I focus on Andrew O’Hagan’s Mayflies but I’ll be talking about many other literary friends too inc Lord of the Rings.
Ep #5 is coming this October, and our first female guest on The Lit Path is the marvellous @AmandaPCraig, author of the new novel High and Low. Amanda speaks to @jackaldane about the melodies and mysteries of male friendship as written in Andrew O'Hagan's Mayflies (2020). Stay tuned!

George Orwell’s 📚 Keep the Aspidistra Flying 📚 was published 90 years ago this year. @J_Bloodworth and @jackaldane discuss the novel’s framing of the battle of the sexes, and why Gordon Comstock remains a cautionary tale.
