Attacking non-critical consumer-facing infrastructure - like grocery stores - with pre-warned and limited scope cyber attacks is the best way to convince your population they need to harden their society. It's really classic Ender's Game - you only get to use the weapon once, it has to destroy the enemy completely. Real catastrophe is not spoiling meat, its multi-megawatt turbines that go beyond safe RPM, critical valves in chemical refining that report the wrong position, air traffic control networks. Destruction of hard infrastructure that is replaceable on a year-to-decade timescale. Like a water treatment plant, transformer station, airport, and so on. Food is the most high throughput thing in our society besides gasoline. It has a residency time of a few days on shelves, and so any total loss of inventory is recoverable on the scale of a week.
UPDATE: The European refrigeration cyberattack has now reached Italy and Romania, bringing the total to at least 10 countries affected across Europe. In Italy, several Coop stores in Sicily were hit, including at least three in Catania and one in Palermo. In Romania, at least six stores have reportedly been affected. Some affected businesses have yet to publicly disclose the incidents, meaning the actual number of countries and locations impacted could be even higher. The full scale of this cyberattack remains unknown. Countries affected so far: 🇸🇪 Sweden 🇧🇪 Belgium 🇱🇺 Luxembourg 🇪🇪 Estonia 🇮🇪 Ireland 🇳🇱 Netherlands 🇫🇮 Finland 🇩🇰 Denmark 🇮🇹 Italy 🇷🇴 Romania

if you wanted to create a big enough incident to encourage the supply chain to take software updates and cybersecurity seriously but not so big as to cause immediate harm to consumers this sure would be a good way to do it
🚨 NEW: Britain is on alert to protect Tesco and Sainsbury's fridges amid cyber attacks on similar fridges across Europe Hackers are remotely accessing them and turning temperatures up to as high as 80C

If he keeps saying things like that, it will become impossible for Canadians to pay for their own drinks in any bar in the democratic world.

Re: the perpetual “how do people read so many books?” discourse: Average person reads 1 page per minute and if we call the average book 365 pages (it’s probably less) then you will average 1 book per year for each minute you devote to reading each day. Pretty simple.

as a professional editor: Grammarly is trash and the main people who use it can't tell the difference, which is a huge part of the problem
Replying to @Thinkwert
But in many, perhaps most, cases Pangram-flagged students are not really using AI in an egregiously unethical matter as far as I can tell when I talk with them. Often what I find is Grammarly or Word’s Copilot is at use & students are shocked to discover that it is detectable.

We often talk about literacy in relation to art, and yes, very important for that. But also important for more prosaic things like leases, contracts, and policies.
