Fuelled or Fooled? Examining the Evidence and Mechanisms Behind Ultra-High Carbohydrate Intake in Endurance Athletes link.springer.com/article/10… @theplews1 & team describe lack of.evidence for many of the claims for ultra high carb intake... but also explore how they may be working beyond our current evidence base

Fuelled or Fooled? Our latest Sports Medicine paper examines the evidence for ultra-high carbohydrate intake in endurance sport. Bottom line: promising in theory, but current evidence is insufficient to support broad recommendations for most athletes. link.springer.com/article/10…

I trained Hyrox endurance with Ironman record holder Dan Plews this weekend. @theplews1 At this point I consider myself a fairly good endurance athlete, but nowhere near the level of Dan. Our physiological response to the session was radically different. Dan's heart rate remained fairly consistent across the strength and endurance work, whereas I had extreme heart rate spikes on each of the pure strength components. This explains why Dan is able to run close to his threshold running pace during Hyrox, but I can’t even sustain my marathon pace 👇

Can carbs during exercise spare muscle glycogen? Yes,but barely. Our new meta-analysis (31 studies) shows CHO intake = a small reduction in muscle glycogen use (~20–25 mmol·kg⁻¹ over ~110 min). No effect of: carb dose, timing, type, exercise mode, starting glycogen.

“I’m not saying things like triathlon are bad for you, but you can’t hold that much muscle mass… with Hyrox that isn’t something we need to be as concerned about” Dr. Dan Plews explains why he's taken up the sport of Hyrox. @theplews1

Is it obligatory to ingest >90g carbohydrate/hr if one wants to run a sub-2hr marathon? This theory is based on 2 key presumptions. First that the oxidation of fat provides essentially no energy for elite athletes running at 21.2km/hr. Second that the rate of exogenous carbohydrate oxidation by the muscles during 2 hours of exercise exactly equals the rate of carbohydrate ingestion. @PhilipPrins11 and I evaluate these assumptions and conclude that the 2hr marathon will only be run by athletes able to extract at least some energy from fat oxidation when running at such a high intensity for 2 hours. frontiersin.org/journals/nut… @LoreofRunning1 @theplews1 @sweatscience @Sean_Sako @TheNoakesF @AKoutnik

🧵Very-low carb (ketogenic; LCHF) vs high-carb diet (HCLF): -Ironman triathletes (n=10)🚴‍♂️ -"Hitting the Wall"🥵 -Homeostasis monitoring ("Keto-Adaptation")📈 Our hypothesis was wrong...again 🔍CRITICAL QUESTIONS: 1) Does adopting an LCHF diet impair strenuous time-to-exhaustion performance? 2) Does carb supplementation (3.4g/20min) during exercise, 6-12x lower than current CHO fuelling recommendations, improve time-to-exhaustion on LCHF? If so, how? 3) Keto-adaptation homeostasis timeline? 🔏KEY CONTROLS: 1) Randomized & Controlled 2) ❎Crossover Design 3) ↔️Calories 4) ↔️Physical Activity Load 5) Dietary Compliance:⬆️BHB + CGM What did we see? 1/n 🔗Detailed study breakdown below

You will be convinced when the top 0.00000025% of the population does it? Where genetics and training are the primary drivers of success? What about crossover controlled RCTs which shows it repeatedly in high level athletes? What about the other 99.999999%

We are thrilled to see this one published just in time for Christmas! Carbohydrate ingestion during prolonged exercise blunts the reduction in power output at the moderate-to-heavy intensity transition Congrats @Harrison7738800 @CarynZinn @theplews1 pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3970…
