As a Lutheran, and a Christian generally, I trust the tradition of the Church Catholic on matters doctrine and practice where it is not in opposition to the divinely inspired Scriptures.

The Divine Liturgy is beautiful. The Tridentine Mass is beautiful. But beautiful worship cannot compensate for a confused Gospel. Don't become EO/RC for the vibes.

The Lutheran orthodox have no problem stressing that true repentance from sin is necessary for there to truly be saving faith, in theological and pastoral contexts. Have mercy on the the reformed, pietist, ‘lordship salvation’ types.

Lutherans really dropped the ball on a whole generation of guys looking for what they had Most of the churches now are second rate versions of the boomer evangelicalism no one wants.

Flippant execution of the liturgy, incoherent gobbledygook sermon, unnecessary “comic relief.” This is not how Lutheranism should be. Especially today. But hey, at least I received the Christ’s body and blood. I pray God helps my church and helps me from being overly critical.

Obviously, not every church has to be to this level. But it’s never “hey, that’s nice, maybe we should try chanting the psalms”. Instead, it’s immediately met with dismissive and scoffing attitude. I suppose it’s because churches like this expose just how little they are trying.

People need to stop misrepresenting Pope Leo. What he condemns are wars of aggression. He is not a pacifist. As he writes in Magnifica Humanitas, “armed force should be used only as a last resort in cases of legitimate self-defense… the Catechism of the Catholic Church speaks of the possibility of legitimate defense by means of military force” (paragraph 197, and note 182).
