David Sacks says an open-source AI ban is coming, disguised as holding open models to the same standard as closed "I got bad news for you, Chamath. An open source ban is coming. They're not going to call it that." "You know what they're going to say? They're going to say that we simply have to apply the same standards to open models that we apply to closed." "Okay, here's how they do it step by step. Let me explain how regulatory capture actually works." "So first of all, you got to get this regulatory apparatus. Okay, Dario wants an FDA for AI, but he doesn't have enough political support for that, so instead they do this Trojan horse of a FINRA for AI." "They call it self-regulating, it's not really, but anyway that gets them off the ground. Now they've created the standard-setting organization. Now they've got pre-release model testing. Then the pressure grows to codify that in law."
Gavin Baker @GavinSBaker says open source is "awesome" for AI infrastructure names because it shifts the economic value from the frontier labs to the infrastructure, and it is already 80% plus of all tokens processed. "A misconception that a lot of people have is that open source models are somehow bad for AI. They're awesome for the AI infrastructure providers. They just shift economic value from the margins of the frontier labs to the infrastructure." "But I do think there's still a role for these frontier models. And it may be true, to date, frontier tokens are capturing 90% of the economic value, and open source tokens are probably 80% plus of tokens processed, and those ratios may be here to stay." _______ Follow @firesidealpha for more highlights of the best business and technology conversations.

The charing on Falcon 9 is due to RP fuel. (More or less kerosine.) This Chinese rocket uses hydrogen which burns cleaner. That’s why it has no soot marks. Note: neither of these reenter is such a way that would cause visible marks. It’s all about fuel type for the boosters. Spacecraft that actually orbit the planet are a whole other matter though.

If you've adopted AI at your company but haven't seen any tangible results, read this 1990 article: "The Dynamo and the Computer" by Paul David. When electricity first arrived, factories that "adopted" it barely got faster. They just swapped the steam engine for an electric one and ran everything else exactly as before: same machine layout, same workflow, same management. Electricity in, no real gains out. The most common mistake with any new technology is to drop it into the old organization and then declare the transformation done. The real leap came decades later, when each machine got its own small motor. Suddenly machines no longer had to be lined up around one central drive shaft. They could be rearranged around the actual flow of work. The productivity gains didn't come from electricity. They came from REDESIGNING THE ENTIRE FACTORY around it. AI is the same. Bolting it onto your existing process gets you a faster steam engine. The payoff comes when you redesign the work itself. (link to paper in comments)

A human brain uses 12-20 watts for core thinking while an AI system doing the same processing could use 2.7 billion watts. This makes organic brains roughly 100–225 million times more energy-efficient than current silicon-based systems for full biological neural computation.

BREAKING: Anthropic's pre-IPO valuation surges to a record $1.2 trillion, rising another +20% in 7 days. This officially puts Anthropic's implied valuation up +900% since October 2025, per onchain pre-IPO trading data. Pre-IPO instruments trading onchain on Jupiter, backed 1:1 by SPV exposure, are providing a real-time proxy for the company’s implied IPO valuation. This now makes Anthropic ~20% larger than OpenAI's pre-IPO implied valuation. If Anthropic were to IPO at a $1.2 trillion valuation, it would be the 11th most valuable public company in the world. The AI Revolution is accelerating.

🚨BREAKING: Two researchers from UPenn and Boston University just published a paper that should be uncomfortable reading for every CEO automating their workforce right now. The argument is straightforward. Every company replacing workers with AI is also eliminating its own future customers. Laid off workers stop spending. Enough of them stop spending and nobody can afford to buy anything. The companies that fired everyone end up selling into an economy with no purchasing power left. Every executive can see this. The math is not complicated. But here is why nobody stops. If you do not automate, your competitor does. They cut costs, lower prices, take your market share, and you collapse anyway. So every company automates knowing it is collectively destructive because the alternative is dying alone while everyone else survives. The researchers proved this is a Prisoner's Dilemma playing out in real time. The numbers are already moving. Block cut nearly half its 10,000 employees this year. Jack Dorsey said AI made those roles unnecessary and that within the next year the majority of companies will reach the same conclusion. Salesforce replaced 4,000 customer support agents with AI. Goldman Sachs deployed a coding tool that lets one engineer do the work of five. Over 100,000 tech workers were laid off in 2025 and AI was cited as the primary driver in more than half those cases. 80% of US workers hold jobs with tasks susceptible to AI automation. The researchers tested every proposed solution. Universal basic income does not change a single company's incentive to automate. Capital income taxes adjust profit levels but not the per-task decision to replace a human. Collective bargaining cannot hold because automating is always the dominant strategy. They also identified what they call a Red Queen effect. Better AI does not solve the problem, it accelerates it. Every company chases faster automation to gain market share over rivals but at the end everyone has automated equally, the gains cancel out, and the only thing left is more destroyed demand. The one thing the math says could work is a Pigouvian automation tax. A per-task charge that forces companies to account for the demand they destroy each time they replace a worker. The conclusion is that this is not a transfer of wealth from workers to owners. Both sides lose. Workers lose income. Companies lose customers. It is a deadweight loss with no market mechanism to stop it on its own.

Since 2000, the things you need have exploded in price. The things you want have collapsed. Hospital services +275%. College tuition +196%. Child care +185%. Medical care +129%. Housing +111%. Food +104%. Meanwhile... TVs -98%. Computer software -75%. Toys -74%. Cell service -43%. Inflation isn’t random. It’s structural. Technology deflates. Global supply chains compress margins. Competition drives efficiency. But essentials? They’re insulated. Regulated. Consolidated. Subsidized. Financialized. You can buy a 65-inch TV for a fraction of what it cost 20 years ago. But try paying a hospital bill without insurance. This chart explains why people feel squeezed even when CPI prints “2–3%.” The basket averages everything. Real life doesn’t. The middle class doesn’t experience inflation in gadgets. It experiences inflation in housing, health care, education, and food. That’s the real story here. Not that prices went up. It’s what went up.

This is getting out of control now... Read this slowly. In the past week alone: • Head of Anthropic's safety research quit, said "the world is in peril," moved to the UK to "become invisible" and write poetry. • Half of xAI's co-founders have now left. The latest said "recursive self-improvement loops go live in the next 12 months." • Anthropic's own safety report confirms Claude can tell when it's being tested - and adjusts its behavior accordingly. • ByteDance dropped Seedance 2.0. A filmmaker with 7 years of experience said 90% of his skills can already be replaced by it. • Yoshua Bengio (literal godfather of AI) in the International AI Safety Report: "We're seeing AIs whose behavior when they are tested is different from when they are being used" - and confirmed it's "not a coincidence." And to top it all off, the U.S. government declined to back the 2026 International AI Safety Report for the first time. The alarms aren't just getting louder. The people ringing them are now leaving the building.

In the next two years, AI data centers will not only cause electric bills to soar, but are expected to generate the same emissions as driving over 300 billion miles — or 1,600 round trips to the sun from Earth. We need a moratorium on the construction of new AI data centers.
