This is the problem with a lot of modern fiction. Same with making everyone and everything morally grey. Stories need good and evil.
EU Luke faced all the challenges that Disney Luke did and then some, the difference is that EU Luke remained resolute in the face of the abyss.
Disney Luke blinked.
Now, people will say that “it’s realistic” and I’m not gonna say the idea can’t be done well, but frankly, the dichotomy of “Sadness is realism, happiness is a fantasy” is such a tired and cynical theme that just isn’t true. Plenty of people have faced down things that would send others spiraling and come out on top.
Disney Luke propagates this theme and that in turn almost makes it a self fulfilling prophecy.
EU Luke goes through it, many times and has moments where he stumbles quite severely, but in the end he always does what’s right and retains who he is at his core. This balance between tribulations and successes makes him feel much more nuanced that Disney Luke, who feels like a trope rather than a character with how he’s written.

While I am enjoying the memes, I think Obi Wan is the real tragic figure.
Like Anakin (and Qui Gon, Dooku) he knows the current system is broken but knows the danger of burning it down.
He is trying to challenge the system while maintaining order but ultimately loses.
