The West’s abuse of the economic weapon has created a vast, underground world economy, with dark fleets, shadow banking, illicit money flows, front companies, and shadowy middle men. One consequence of these developments is to vastly enlarge the space for illicit activity world wide. One is reminded here of the Prohibition and the big bang of corruption with the fx controls of the early License Raj. It’s not just criminals and smugglers, shadow bankers and dark shippers. The opportunities for rebels and warlords have expanded dramatically—illicit arms flows have expanded in tandem. We’re seeing this especially in Horn and the Sahel. I suppose it is fitting that the US is itself reduced to playing cat-and-mouse along the Oman route. Command of the sea, per Mahan, “is the possession of that overbearing power on the sea which drives the enemy’s flag from it, or allows it to appear only as a fugitive.” 😂
What this report makes clear is the bankruptcy of US sanctions policy. It has achieved so much at hurting average people with inflation and shortages but it has achieved nothing in changing government behavior or even denting its ability to fight a war. That is what should be alarming about this report. reuters.com/world/iran/irans…

I was just on @France24_fr talking about the difference between a docker and a computer scientist facing automation. Dockers all over the world are on strike, and with just-in-time, interconnected supply chains, their bargaining power is huge. They’ve read Acemoglu, and it shows

That priceless reaction from Zare after demolishing his American opponent Wyatt Hendrickson 10-0 to storm into the freestyle wrestling final at the World Championships in Astana! What a champ! Gold awaits tomorrow.

High yield spreads going exponential. Fairly reliable financial crisis indicator. 🫧💥
High yield credit spreads are skyrocketing. The ICE BofA CCC- bond yield index is at 6 year highs. Historically, high yield corporate spreads were able to identify impending economic problems before equity markets could. Probably nothing...

This is a universal pattern. People will ask almost everyone for an answer except the person likely to know. Some of them have begun to turn to AI. Now they won't even ask the AI. People massively overestimate basic curiosity. That's why "everyone will learn from AI" is bunk.
My friend made a really impressive app. It's live and has users. He has no idea where it's hosted.

If you work at JSOC or the CIA, take a good look at these fishermen you tried to kill. Why did you try to kill them? Is it because you are stupid, bad people who lack decency and morals? Yes, definitely. But also because your intel is dogshit and AI is just making it worse.

Total hacked is around $3.5B now across multiple chains…
Yet unconfirmed, but possibly there is a massive binance hack happening right now. It looks like a @binance wallet has been drained into new address. Contract call was funded by Tornado Cash. TX hash: 0x53bd38b816c23e74134786c29a8c18d792777998a3b9326047b583100e88e2f3

“When will the war in Iran end? Whenever I want it to end." So much for the legal fiction that it isn’t a war. U.S. law and the Constitution prohibit the Executive branch from fighting a war that isn’t declared or authorized by Congress.

Dario Amodei seems to want to capture a share of the value customers generate using Anthropic's models. Imagine if a power company charged more for electricity because you used it for particularly valuable work. This kind of outcome-based pricing would be pure techno-rentierism.
Dario Amodei: some tokens Claude produces are worth a few cents, others could be worth tens of millions of dollars. His examples: 1. Telling someone to restart their Mac: the model has said it 10 million times, worth a dollar or less 2. Telling a pharma company to move an aromatic ring to the other end of a molecule: potentially tens of millions 3. Expect pay-for-results pricing, or labor-like pricing by the hour 4. It's a new industry, so many models will be tried Today pricing is simpler: per the S-1, usage-based pricing was 80% of H1 2026 revenue and subscriptions 20%. Spot the difference. 🇪🇺 @EIB, Europe's public bank, lends @Airbus €3bn. With interest, to be repaid and at competitive market condition. @USTradeRep: a risk to the transatlantic trade truce. 🇺🇸 Washington state approved an $8.7bn tax break for Boeing in 2013, the biggest in US history. Nothing to repay. @USTradeRep: nothing to see here. Add also the trade deals: Japan, South Korea, Indonesia and China have pledged more than 450 Boeing jets to the White House as part of their trade deals with the US - orders decided by tariff threats, not by price. Not exactly the "market-driven" aerospace Ambassador Greer talks about. Usual American double standard: When US wins, it's the free market. When others win, it's unfair competition. Meanwhile, the WTO ruled against US subsidies to Boeing too – and Europe has kept its retaliation on hold since 2021 anyway. One loan, with interest, and Washington throws a tantrum. Can you imagine what would happen if Europe came together and started competing, with the same tools and methods, in all the other areas?
Today, Ambassador Greer issued a statement regarding the status of the U.S.-EU deal to pause duties on certain EU imports, following a record-breaking loan from the European Investment Bank to Airbus. ustr.gov/about/policy-office…
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The US gave Boeing billions too (tax breaks, R&D support, etc.). seattletimes.com/seattle-news/l… The current US-EU deal requires financing on market terms for both sides. Airbus and the EIB say this loan is a standard commercial facility on market terms. ustr.gov/about-us/polic…

Another story impossible to imagine in any other administration: the president's son goes hunting with a Russian criminal who is part of Putin's security entourage
The trip highlights the remarkable relationship between a son of the US president and a tycoon with a criminal record who has close ties to Vladimir Putin’s personal security service. Intelligence experts say such connections are ripe for manipulation. ft.trib.al/p0LBRYI

Surely their internal models can write their own RL functions now. From what I've heard the frontier people already are kinda jobless, they don't do anything really. That's why they roam around twitter trying to target/troll random mathematicians. Just to feel something.
The only reason the frontier people don't want recursive self improvement is because they'd all be out of a job.

The meeting in Tehran was a big PR win for Iran. Major regional powers went to Tehran to ask for help on Yemen. And Iran likely laid out it terms for that help. It could yield results. Inviting Iran to join Mecca Alliance as some had anticipated did not happen. In fact Iran is calling the meeting the Tehran Summit. It sounds like Iran is envisioning a different regional arrangement one that Iran wants to define and play a central role in. And per Rezaie’s comments after the meeting Iran’s vision which is clearly aimed at keeping US out if the region does not easily square with the relations of the three Mecca Alliance partners with US.
"If our four countries sit together, many of the regions problem can be solved. This trip would be the beginning of a real transformation in the region." "Despite the American threats, these three major countries came to Iran and talk to us. That shows that the American have no more impact on the world." - Major General Mohsen Rezai, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council
