The depth of reform needed to ensure new housing is in the right places shouldn’t be underestimated. It has to include giving public planning and development bodies land assembly and “master developer” powers and a duty to create truly walkable places…1/ theguardian.com/politics/202…

Lessons from #HurricaneBeryl: Everyone’s heart should cry out for the people of Union Island, Carriacou, St. Vincent, Grenada, parts of Jamaica, St. Lucia, and the fisherfolk of Barbados, all of whom suffered greatly under Hurricane Beryl’s severe blow. thestkittsnevisobserver.com/…

/3 The tree has also contributed greatly to the quality of life our family and our neighbours have enjoyed and shared. It’s a mature tree; it’s not grown much but it has thrived - and it’s enhanced our well-being. Growth isn’t everything. #DoughnutEconomics

This Lime tree was already mature when we moved in, those 40 years ago. It hasn’t grown much since then - but it continues to thrive. It supports the well-being of generation after generation of birds (families of Jackdaws have lived in it for probably over 100 years) and bees 2/

I’m sure you are right. I’m typing this sitting in our garden on a lovely May evening looking past our home to the street-side tree that was one of the reasons we fell in love with this place 40 years ago…1/ #DoughnutEconomics @KateRaworth

What a fascinating article about another very complex urban challenge. We urgently need to develop properly integrated urban planning, management and maintenance strategies.
🏙️ The world's major cities are facing a significant challenge: soil subsidence, caused by rapid urbanization and rising sea levels, a phenomenon that particularly threatens coastal cities. 🌊 #Urbanization #ClimateChange 📥 Subscribe to our newsletter to not miss any articles.

Working with local residents on their design and maintenance, Antwerp is piloting tuinstraten (“garden streets”) in five districts across the city. They improve resiliency (to flooding and heat), liveability and sociability—making these spaces calmer, greener and more beautiful. – at Antwerp, Belgium

Trams have huge potential to transform urban streets, to make them calmer, cleaner, greener and both more efficient and more sociable. Lighter-touch, lower-cost solutions like this are just what’s needed - particularly for smaller cities.

Yes, yes, yes! Visit a UK city with trams - like Manchester, Sheffield or Nottingham for example - and experience how much better the “trammed” streets feel - then imagine how much better again if much of the track-bed was soft, green rain gardens.

Our film INSECURE was co-created with Geography students & has poetry woven through it. The students created the poems after hearing the stories from the community on how coastal change has impacted them Hope you enjoy 😊 youtu.be/dV6z0LKobfE?feature…

The consensus seemed to be that what’s needed for better places isn’t less Planning, but better-resourced Planning. Good, thought-provoking sessions throughout the day at #Restitch24 in Coventry.
