“Hardly an epidemic” - Economist-speak for the plague of migrant sex crimes - must now be filed alongside “largely peaceful protests”
A hard look at Britain’s data suggests so. But it is hardly an epidemic economist.com/britain/2026/1…
we absolutely should in fact genetically engineer bioluminescent plants & trees and then completely eradicate the affront to God that is LED street lights from the face of the Earth
Aden in 1960. And some idiots still insist that the British Empire was “bad”

This proves my theory that the Marseillaise is a really crap national anthem, albeit a distinctive, very jaunty tune. It’s too complex and hard to sing for the first stanzas. Stirring national anthems need to be simple, like Oasis songs
After a while, when a big shell landed in Verdun it automatically churned up a geyser of human flesh - the already dead - which then rained down on the living troops: a slapping rain of rotting human bone, fat, brains and putrid horse flesh. Disease thus piled on disease
The gory details of Verdun are so impossibly horrific they sound unreal. But they’re real. The stench of the 300 day battle - death, shit, piss, rats, gas, corpse flies, rotting men and horses - was so bad, new recruits began vomiting when they got within five kilometres

These are the only posts that the leaders of other parties have made about the most consequential technology of our age.
Embarrassing.
Bienvenue to the international capital of champagne, the royal citadel of Gallic glamour: Reims! The home of Cristal and Dom Perignon!
France is in trouble
Place Galland, Verdun. Utterly anonymous - yet it has a unique, distressing history. In the 10th century it was a big slave market, where captured Slavs were sent south to the harems of Islamic Iberia. Specialist workshops, hereabouts, castrated the males before selling them

A very wonderful meditation on war and peace in Europe by @thomasknox (I guess). If you don't want to pay Michael Gove's wages, find another way - read it in a supermarket perhaps.

The Castle of Bouillon is the castle of your childhood dreams, the castle in the fairytale. You can very easily get lost, the vaults and tunnels go on for miles, carved into living rock
And just outside the gates there lives a tavern keeper, with two beautiful daughters…
Bouillon Castle. Once owned by Godfrey of that name, who pawned it in 1096 so he could fight the First Crusade & seize Jerusalem from the infidel. Which he did. The building is so mighty & pivotal - commanding the Ardennes - it was used militarily into the 20th century. Superb
We really are deep into Galileo territory here. You go to jail for heretical IDEAS
Belgium is preparing a criminal case against philosopher @nathancofnas that could result in up to 3 years of jail time.
Why jail a philosopher? Because Cofnas has argued that some race differences in psychological traits might be due to genetic differences. And this allegedly violates a new law that Belgium passed a month ago against 'dissemination of racial ideas' and 'incitement to discrimination or racial hatred'.
Here @Rosalind_Arden_ breaks down this strange story of censorship, retaliation, and institutional bullying of scholars who address taboo topics.
From a bleak and rainy Waterloo, to a comfortingly excellent beer, deep in the darkness of the Ardennes. The beer is brewed in the castle of Godfrey de Bouillon. Who ended up “king” of Jerusalem after the First Crusade. Belgium is underrated
