An Indian spy was caught in Pakistan in 1973. He spent the next 35 years in their jails, 17 of them in chains. His wife never stopped waiting. His name was Kashmir Singh, from Punjab. He served in the Indian Army, then took up spying for ₹400 a month. He crossed into Pakistan under the name Ibrahim. In 1973 he was arrested near Rawalpindi. An army court sentenced him to death. At home he had left his wife Paramjit Kaur and three children, all under 10. He was moved through seven jails and kept alone in chains for 17 years. For 35 years he never saw the sky. His family thought he was dead. Only Paramjit kept believing. In 2008 a Pakistani minister found him in a Lahore jail. President Musharraf accepted his mercy petition. On 4 March 2008 he walked across the Wagah border into India. He said he was a spy and he had done his duty.
