The Dodgers are parting ways with hitting coach Aaron Bates, MLBTR has learned. The Dodgers offered Bates a multiyear contract to stay, but the two sides couldn’t agree to terms. He’d been in the organization for 12 years.

I’ve seen the suggestion that if Skenes were to win another Cy in ‘26, he can’t compare himself to Skubal’s $32MM or to free agents because he’ll have 3 years of service rather than 5. But if this section of the CBA remains intact, he can.

It’s true that “particular attention” would have to be given to 3 and 4 year service players, but under “special accomplishment” Skenes could argue for any comparable he wants.

My way of saying that with a Cy this year I think Skenes would have a case for a 30 mil first time arb salary, if he is bold enough to try for that

Not if he tops 107.5 mil from 2026-30
Obviously huge mistake turning down $158 million, but Pete Alonso changed agents and now represented by Scott Boras.

More that the whole conversation is tired and fairly pointless, because neither owners nor players are caretakers of the game who are tasked with what is good or bad for baseball. Also nothing new, goes back at least to Steinbrenner Yankees.
For those saying that what they’re able to do is *not* bad for baseball (not taking a side, genuinely asking a question)… Is there a point when it *is* bad for baseball and what is that point if not now?

Highly theoretical, but if you think Roki has $200 mil in surplus value and taking on the Straw contract increases your chances of signing him by 5%, taking on $11 mil for Straw almost makes sense.

Coco Montes signed a minor league deal with the Rays with an invite to MLB camp. 28 yr old infielder spent this year with the Yomiuri Giants. His Rays contract allows him to become a free agent after.

Roki Sasaki’s agent Joel Wolfe talking to media here in Dallas. Wolfe noted that negativity from the Japanese media has been hard on Sasaki’s mental health.

Asked about the possibility Sasaki chooses a small market team, Wolfe noted that it might be beneficial given his media experience.

1992: Ryne Sandberg gets a $7.1MM AAV, up from previous record of 5.8 by Bobby Bonilla. Astros owner John McMullen screamed at Cubs chairman Stan Cook: “Don’t you know there’s a number between 5 and 7? It’s 6!”

32 years later I’m reminded of that Lords of the Realm passage as Juan Soto essentially gets baseball’s first $500MM, $600MM, and $700MM contract!

Albert Pujols was paid through the age of 41. If Juan Soto is that’d mean a 16-year contract.

Great time to be a free agent starting pitcher. Collectively the six from our top 50 who have signed have gotten 12.1% better in AAV than we predicted, with Montas and Severino leading with Snell/Kikuchi matching expectations.

That’s often the case with the earlier deals, though.

MLB salary cap only happens if the MLBPA magically becomes weak like those of other sports. If you want more parity, think of something else.
