In San Francisco, especially in communities that are already enduring the painful impact of aggressive federal immigration enforcement, many of us are feeling fear and anger as we witness the horrific events unfolding in Minneapolis. Yesterday San Franciscans, as they have done time and time again, made their voices heard peacefully and expressed the deep concern many are feeling right now. As our city agencies make preparations for public safety ahead of Super Bowl week and Lunar New Year and San Franciscans see more local officers on our streets, I want to be clear about our priorities. SFPD and our local law enforcement are focused on protecting public safety—including the right to peaceful expression. We will continue to uphold San Francisco’s longstanding policies that keep local law enforcement focused on keeping our city safe—not federal immigration enforcement. If you see SFPD on the street, they are there to keep you safe, not to assist immigration enforcement. San Francisco is strongest when we come together to stand up for each other and our values. That’s what makes this the greatest city in the world. We are going to have each other’s backs and keep our city safe.

Statement from the family of Alex Pretti, Michael and Susan Pretti:  “We are heartbroken but also very angry.    Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately he will not be with us to see his impact. I do not throw around the hero term lightly. However his last thought and act was to protect a woman.    The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He has his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down all while being pepper sprayed.    Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man. Thank you”

President Obama on Charlie Kirk: “What happened was a tragedy… We can also, at the same time, say that I disagree with the idea that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a mistake. That's not me politicizing the issue. It's making an observation about who are we as a country.”

Jennings: He does not have a right to have a TV show where he lies his ass off to the American people and attacks half this country on a nightly basis Phillip: There are plenty of people over on another network who lied about the last election, who denigrate half the country every single night. And guess what? They are allowed to do it.

Mike Birbiglia tells fellow comedians to speak out against ABC pulling #JimmyKimmelLive: "I've spent a lot of time in public and private defending comedians I don't agree with. If you're a comedian and you don't call out the insanity of pulling Kimmel off the air - don't bother spouting off about free speech anymore." variety.com/2025/tv/news/jim…

I have formally requested the Trump Administration rescind their unlawful deployment of troops in Los Angeles county and return them to my command. We didn’t have a problem until Trump got involved. This is a serious breach of state sovereignty — inflaming tensions while pulling resources from where they’re actually needed. Rescind the order. Return control to California.

“No government—regardless of which party is in power—should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue.” - President Alan Garber hrvd.me/GarberRespond347t

From an operational security perspective, this is the highest level of fuckup imaginable. These people cannot keep America safe.
American war planning usually takes place in highly secure facilities. But the Trump administration planned its strikes on the Houthis using a group chat—and accidentally included The Atlantic’s editor in chief, @JeffreyGoldberg. theatlantic.com/politics/arc…

But it is from those very centers that discoveries that are changing the world began. RNA synthesis, GLP-1 agonists, Hepatitis C cure - all came from Academics FIRST through government support. Science for the sake of science.

Last year, I called out the dangers of Project 2025 and the damage it’d do to our country. Americans were assured the Trump team had no ties to it—then nominated one of its authors to lead OMB. My view has not changed and I will be a hard NO on Mr. Vought.
