We expect our leaders to be statesmen and stateswomen, but in invoking 'free speech' ideals to enforce #censorship for their own political ends, they show themselves to be authoritarian bullies.
Anti-woke attacks on universities – rather than good faith criticisms – follow a coordinated and predictable playbook of select inflammatory anecdotes, generalized allegations intended to discredit entire disciplines or institutions, #disinformation and harassment campaigns, information requests and media pile-ons and other tactics, @Cambridge_Uni and @CambUP_Psych researchers @Sander_vdLinden and Alan Jagolinzer write in @timeshighered. They contend that these tactics seek to silence inconvenient research while selectively invoking free speech.
The business and social scientists distinguish legitimate scrutiny — which requires evidence, transparency, formal investigation and due process — from personal attacks and demands for instant punishment, warning that universities underestimate these campaigns’ aggression. They urge academics to uphold rigorous research standards, expose attackers’ incentives and conflicts of interest, remain publicly engaged, and resist pre-emptive compliance with political pressure. 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/anti-w…

Why Is #Paris burning, and how is #misinformation distorting the protests?
Mass demonstrations across #France have sparked widespread unrest, while incomplete information, misleading images and videos circulating online have raised questions about the extent of the violence. The protests began in September as high school students demanded action over teacher shortages, deteriorating school facilities and inadequate educational resources. Labor unions, university students and members of the #YellowVest movement have since joined demonstrations over rising living costs, stagnant wages and government spending cuts. On Oct. 17, an estimated 550,000 people participated in demonstrations nationwide, according to France's Interior Ministry, although labor unions reported higher turnout. While many protests remained peaceful, clashes between demonstrators and police resulted in fires, property damage and arrests across Paris and other major cities.
However, viral social media posts have amplified misleading narratives by presenting outdated footage and AI-generated images as evidence of the ongoing unrest. Other misleading posts have circulated footage from previous demonstrations, creating confusion about the scale and severity of the current protests. Although the demonstrations reflect genuine economic and political grievances, misinformation has contributed to exaggerated portrayals of violence throughout the country. Most posts are anonymous or unattributable. Harnessing social media algorithms this way can help push a social or political agenda, reforms, discredit protesters, or simply serve as click-bait to boost engagement. The spread of manipulated imagery and misrepresented footage highlights how misinformation can distort public understanding of legitimate political demonstrations. 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/associ…

Has Russian disinformation played a role in recent events in France?
Unchecked Russia-linked #disinformation campaigns impersonating trusted news outlets, intending to undermine support for Ukraine, deepen divisions and erode confidence in institutions ahead of France’s 2027 presidential election, may have helped spark the violence roiling the European nation and close U.S. ally. A @NewsGuardRating report found an approximately 850 percent increase in fake stories mimicking media brands between the first halves of 2025 and 2026 – more than half imitating some of France's most trusted media brands like @LePoint, @euronews and @AFP, and U.S.-based outlets like @CNN and @politico. It appears that doppelganger outlets with similar logos, layouts and website addresses spread fabricated stories through large online networks sought to influence #AI response, bombard fact-checkers with false reports, and create confusion and discord. One fabrication claimed thousands of Ukrainian soldiers receiving treatment in France had joined local criminal gangs. 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/france…

This is a wake-up call. Our social media is being manipulated by foreign agents with the express intention of sowing hatred, mistrust, and misinformation among Americans.
Russia is behind a lot of it, using programs designed to disrupt our country and turn us against each other. We should be cynical about what we see on social media, and not fall for the rage bait.
This is also a national security issue and if the social media companies dont take immediate action, they are complicit. It's time for real regulation that requires them to find and shut down foreign bot networks, and holds them accountable when they don't.

Watch MAGA X invent a scandal about James Talarico in real time.
For four days they teased it and built up to the big day. Paxton called him "missing." Spencer Pratt's "sources" put him in a mental health facility. Then, at 1:05 pm, Nick Sortor posted that an Ohio mental hospital "confirms" Talarico was discharged.
50 accounts pushed the claim within 20 minutes. Those posts have 9.3 million views.
The white dots are copy-pasted posts. There are 605 of them. One account posted the same text 83 times in under 2 hours.
The hospital says Talarico never received treatment there. Talarico says he's never even been to Ohio.
This story eventually even made it to MSM. This is MAGA manufacturing an alternative reality in real time.

At 1:05 p.m. on Oct 11, Nick Sortor posted that an Ohio mental hospital “CONFIRMS” James Talarico was discharged. That evening the hospital said Talarico never received treatment there. Talarico says he's never even been to Ohio. Rhein Amacher, who made the recorded call, posted that he made up a verification code to get past the front desk.
This story occurred over several days. Ken Paxton called Talarico “missing” on Oct 7. Sara Gonzales teased “unverified information” that would “END his campaign” on Oct 8. On Oct 9, Spencer Pratt said his sources put Talarico in a mental health facility, and a handful of accounts pasted near-identical “credible sources are leaking” posts. At 7:50 a.m. on the 11th, Sortor gave Talarico a deadline, “let us know by 1pm ET today.”
The earlier pushes never fully took off, and acted more as a booster for the posts that came later. Pratt's post got 6.4 million views, but only about 60 accounts posted about the story in the hour after it. Caroline Wren's private-plane theory the next day drew about 40. Before the 11th, the story never topped 80 posts an hour. In the first hour after Sortor's post, 267 accounts posted about it, and by 3 p.m. it was running at almost 500 posts an hour.
The first chart counts each account only once, at its first post about the story. Nothing they posted after that is counted, so it shows who started this and how far those first posts went. The first wave carried the whole thing. Sortor's post and the posts that followed in the next 12 minutes have 9 million views between them. The 55 accounts that joined in the first 20 minutes got 80% of the views in that lane. The other lines never came close. “He lied and covered it up,” the line Elon Musk and Richard Grenell pushed, got about 2 million views across 100 accounts. “He was in an Ohio mental hospital” got about 2 million across 132.
The pushback grew the opposite way, the way a real response does. It started small and kept building all afternoon and evening, with 12 to 46 new accounts joining every hour from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Leave out the three biggest posts, which were the hospital's statement, Talarico's reply and Ed Krassenstein's own call to the hospital, and regular accounts pushing back still reached 6 million views. The claim had nearly 90% of its views by 2 p.m. and barely grew after that. By the end of the night, the pushback had more views than the claim, 13 million to 11.4 million.
The second chart is the inorganic behavior, and it covers Oct 8 to 11, not just the day of the "exclusive". Sortor's headline was reposted word for word, or nearly, by 18 other accounts, half of them with under 1,000 followers. Caroline Wren's private-plane post was copied by 14. Four accounts posted the same Eric Daugherty post within 74 seconds of each other. Four more posted the same MAGAVoice line within 54 seconds, four hours after it first went up. Some accounts barely post anything of their own. One copied 21 of its 23 posts about Talarico from other accounts, another 11 of 11. And the spammers flooded the replies. One pasted the same reply 85 times in about two hours, another 15 times in 10 minutes.
Views are each post's total as of early Oct 12. A copy means word for word or at least 90% the same as an earlier post.
I pulled and analyzed about 14,000 posts for this. Sharing it helps more than anything, and if you want to chip in so I can keep doing this, the links are in my bio. It goes a long way.

Can AI be used for good in the fight against medical misinformation?
It’s possible depending on its tone and level of empathy, according to a new Washington State University study. The study suggests that #AI fact-checking bots cater to individual users’ level of anthropomorphism – the tendency to assign human characteristics to non-human entities.
Porismita Borah, a professor at WSU - Edward R. Murrow College of Communication and corresponding author of the new publication in the International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, has spent the last decade studying how to effectively combat #misinformation in our evolving media landscape. Her recent study indicates that by implementing accurate tone-detection and empathy into AI responses, users may be more receptive to the correction of misinformed beliefs.
'In this study, it did not necessarily matter whether the correction came from a human being or an AI agent,' said Borah. 'What mattered was the tone and how the tone aligned with people's beliefs about whether AI agents should be more humanlike or machinelike.' 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/wsu-ai…

How has the spread of measles been impacted by misinformation and our children's return to school?
False or misleading claims about vaccine safety and efficacy, changes to local vaccine requirements, confusing or changing public-health messages, and other variables have created an environment for once eradicated childhood diseases like mumps and measles to return and spread, reporting in @19thnews and @USATODAY show. Outbreaks in Pennsylvania, Missouri, Florida and elsewhere are growing now that kids have headed back to classrooms nationwide and medical professionals advise parents. The @CDCgov report a decline in routine vaccines for kindergarteners this year, while personal exemptions rose to 4.2 percent nationwide, creating a tenuous situation for further disease spread. 'I understand having a deluge of information from many sources and just being confused and having concerns,' said Dr. Marvia D. Jones, PhD, MPH, director of the Kansas City Health Department in Missouri. 'There’s no judgment in that.'
Financial incentives, platform algorithms that reward sensationalism and social media tribalism continue to roil public health beyond childhood vaccines with fewer adults signing up for RSV, influenza and COVID shots. 'I think that our profession trains people really, really well to understand the science,' says California pediatrician Richard Pan, who is actively working to counter medical #misinformation and #disinformation. 'When those doctors get a chance to speak to patients directly and address their concerns thoroughly, you then start to build trust.' 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/back-t…

The White House press pool – a rotating group of reporters who cover, accompany and share their reporting with the wider press and the public – are at the center of a dispute with the President and how he is covered by the media, @APLaurieKellman @AP reports. The President's barring of @CNN, @MSNOWNews and @politico from the White House, and subsequent boycott by all other major participants in the pool, has created an information 'black out' of the most powerful man and administration in the world. Both moves have implications for public information and the press' Constitutionally mandated role of being present when the public cannot, questioning policies and the use of taxpayer dollars, and holding the powerful accountable.
The system is not perfect, but the pool maintains its own internal 'checks and balance' system by scrutinizing each other's work for accuracy, fairness and balance. When mistakes occur, pool reporters correct them online, in print or over the airwaves. The White House Correspondents' Association, whose members make up the press pool, also notes that its reporters ask questions on behalf of the American people, so constituents can assess how officials use their public authority and taxpayer-funded resources. Without an active press on-site, the administration controls all public information – without independent witnesses, scrutiny, context, corroboration, exact quotes or accountability – which has the potential for abuse and distribution of #disinformation and #misinformation. The Integrity Project will continue to monitor this fluid story. 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/white-…

What does Wednesday's #Meta settlement mean for parents and kids?
Families should notice the impacts right away, including:
- Mandatory two-hour time limits across apps
- Usage blocks from midnight to 6 a.m. to protect sleep and the silencing of notifications during school hours
- No more infinite scrolls
- Hidden public 'likes'
- Ban cosmetic and plastic surgery filters for teenage accounts
- Conduct age verifications to keep those 13 and younger off the apps
The settlement, which follows similar agreements and national policy changes in Australia and EU countries, creates a new consumer safety framework likely to reshape safety standards across all of big tech in the United States. Are Anthony Fauci’s newly released texts being used to spread false claims about COVID-19 vaccines?
Released text messages from former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Director Dr. Anthony Fauci have prompted a renewed wave of #misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines. In January 2021, Fauci privately engaged in a discussion about whether fever and immune responses following a second vaccine dose could theoretically be associated with miscarriage during the first trimester. This relatively innocuous line of questioning has since been used online to support a claim that COVID-19 vaccines definitively caused an 82 percent miscarriage rate among pregnant women. In reality, there is no evidence that COVID-19 vaccination increases the risk of miscarriage. As the Fauci texts continue to circulate across social media, drama and controversy surrounding COVID vaccines in general have contributed to the ability for disingenuous actors to blur the distinction between a documented scientific discussion and a false conclusion drawn from that discussion. This kind of example remains critical to understanding the use of #misinformation to create doubt and confusion. With @PolitiFact, @GraceCarnathan @NEJM 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/politi…

Are certain languages prioritized in mainstream LLM fact-checking systems?
It appears so, but @dartmouth class of 2027 computer science student, @FabriceNiyigaba, is working to close those gaps.
As AI platforms like @claudeai and @ChatGPT have become adept at spotting #misinformation in languages like English and Arabic, in lesser known languages like Kinyarwanda, they are ‘essentially nonfunctional’ at detecting propaganda, according to Niyigaba’s research. That’s why he created KinyaProp, a dataset that can be integrated into AI programs to accurately flag misinformation in Kinyarwanda, the national language of Rwanda.
KinyaProp is programmed to pick up on the cultural nuances embedded in the Kinyarwanda language that mainstream platforms struggle to master. This is a critical component to accurately picking up on emotionally charged phrasing and propaganda. “There is a difference between an LLM being able to reproduce a language and understanding it deeply enough to detect when it is, or is not, being used manipulatively,” Niyigaba says.
This new tool makes an encouraging step for all languages underrepresented in AI research and application, particularly for Bantu, a family of over 600 languages spoken by 350 million Africans. 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/dartmo…

How are WhatsApp voice notes fueling Ebola #misinformation in Congo?
A few weeks ago, when a team of four #Ebola response volunteers arrived at a roadside market with disinfectant spray, an untrusting admin for a local @WhatsApp group immediately began sharing a voice note to his community. He claimed that the volunteers had shown up at the market to spray the deadly virus into the air, resulting in an immediate crowd gathering to heckle the responders. The crowd took away their spray pumps, shouted insults, and eventually marched the four volunteers about a mile to a nearby police station.
WhatsApp voice notes have not only become a way to easily spread blasts across groups with thousands of members, but they also disseminate the spread of false claims to those who may not be able to fully read or write. Essentially, this format makes misinformation more accessible.
The spread of misinformation around Ebola response efforts not only puts communities at greater risk as the virus persists, but increases hostility towards health workers and respondents, further exacerbating the health crisis. This epidemic is moving at an alarming pace. Confirmed cases of the Bundibugyo Ebola strain have surged past 2,000 in July since its first detection two months ago, an alarming figure compared to the eight months it took to reach the same mark during the 2018-20 epidemic, which is the second deadliest on record.
As this health crisis evolves and more rumors and false claims circulate impacted communities, a spokeswoman for @Meta Platforms says the company is working to build restrictions to slow the spread of misinformation. This includes flagging messages and limiting the number of times a user can forward messages. 👉 tipaz.org/latest-news/wsj-eb…
