In case you were wondering “will Scrum help us beat our competition.” It was celebrated as a success at Skype but our more nimble competitors out-executed us without it. More on why Scrum is absent from fast-moving and nimble companies: blog.pragmaticengineer.com/p…

the thesis of the argument is "a bad api got more adoption than our perfect api, so sometimes it's better to be worse at engineering" when, well, "social factors and not technical factors drive adoption" is the lesson nerds stubbornly refuse to learn

This is why @bethcodes calls the under-graduate degree “pre-development" by analogy with "pre-med"
As a software developer, you may be called upon to perform some of these tasks in your career. How well a CS degree prepares you for these tasks (and whether it even should prepare you for these) is left as an exercise to the reader. 🧵 1/

Most software practices & tools were created by people on high-trust teams of developers aligned around a shared vision. The tool or practice is heralded as a success, then adopted by 100x as many low-trust teams. They fail. The tool is blamed, not the distrust. New tool time.

Where are all the modern software design books? There was a huge burst of creativity around software design & analysis from the late 1980s up to the early 2000s (All the OOD ones, GoF, Fowler, Martin, Evans, HtDP etc) and then there's not been much since (except for DDD stuff)

Why did Apple not test what happens when a user supplies “True” as their last name? Is it incompetence? I don’t think so. I think the explanation is simpler: it’s not feasible. tomdalling.com/blog/testing/…

#TomsDataOnion made me cry tears of joy, made me rethink my life. I'm shocked that the people involved are still walking free in society and I just don't want to talk about it -- not even with my therapist... Thank you for this nice journey @tom_dalling!
