Don't see anything wrong w/ this opinion. US soccer heads who have been around a while, I would think feel the same. It's how US Soccer is because of the way it's run. Hype hype hype, make as much $ as possible off the player, then on to next one. Hype doesn't make USMNT better. – at Fredericksburg, VA
“It’s not that I don't want them to succeed. I've just seen this story over and over so I'm reticent to, like, go crazy yet.”
Landon Donovan explains caution with Cavan Sullivan and the young USMNT squad despite their four wins in the fall camp.
He was speaking to Tim Howard on Unfiltered Soccer podcast 🗣️
“I am measured and calm because I, unlike a lot of new soccer fans, have seen this story happen over and over,” Donovan said.
“I saw it with Freddy Adu. I saw it with a guy you won't even remember, Santino Quaranta. I saw it with Eddie Johnson. I saw it with Gio [Reyna] and seeing, like, how it's progressed.
“There will be the next superstar at some point. It might be Cavan. I'm hoping it's Cavan, or maybe it's Julian Hall.
“Christian [Pulisic] was unique. Like, he was a superstar, and he became a superstar. Like, we watched it. But that is so rare.
“It is so much more often the case that we get all excited and hyped or whatever, and they have an okay career, but they're not a prominent national team player.
“And so if Cavan continues on this path, keeps going, and then yes, I will be on board.
“It’s not that I don't want them to succeed. I've just seen this story over and over so I'm reticent to, like, go crazy yet.”
Cavan, who recently turned 17, had another assist for Philadelphia Union tonight. He now has 10 goals and 10 assists for them this season.
Of course, the teenager became the youngest player to score for the USMNT last weekend.
Meanwhile, 18-year-old Hall scored for New York Red Bulls tonight and now has 13 goals this season.
He became the youngest player since Brazilian legend Pelé in 1957 to score in each of his first three international appearances.
But Donovan is not on board with the hype train just yet.

Saw a post & it got me thinking... I love #s/stats... Well I wanted to compare 4 of the greats of MY time... #Mario #Ovi #Wayne #Crosby ...W/ Mario missing so many game due to cancer treatment, it's hard to do w/ straight stats... So I projected each over 2,000 games... THOUGHTS? – at Spotsylvania Courthouse, VA
This is like comparing Lemieux to Gretzky... Both different styles of players... Lemieux/Ovechkin great attacking players that that could bring more physicality... Gretzky/Crosby great attacking players but more on the finesse side of things – at Spotsylvania Courthouse, VA
