A few snaps from exploring Amsterdam, including the coolest “city archives” building in the world. That tiling pattern alone is magnificently mathematical! Did I calculate the proportion of my stroopwafel covered in chocolate? You bet I did. Thanks brain :)

Yerevan appreciation post - such a fun city with some incredible art and beautiful views from the cascade. Dating back to 782 BC, it is one of the world’s oldest continually inhabited cities. And is now home to over 50 universities! A place after my own heart ❤️

Thanks for having me BBC Radio 4 - such a pleasure to chat all things Lord of the Rings and Frodo’s insurance policy with Tim Harford on More or Less. Tim telling me he was impressed with my knowledge of the Mines of Moria might lowkey be the best compliment I’ve ever had!

Shoutout to the brilliant students at St Dominic’s for being such an enthusiastic audience today as we calculated the blast radius of the Death Star. The new ‘mathematically correct’ version of Episode IV will no doubt be hitting cinemas very soon!

🎓 6,000 students. One huge celebration of science. And plenty of maths! What a way to wrap up my two days at @newscientist Live at London’s ExCeL! 🚀 Today’s schools-only event brought together 6,000 young people aged 8–18 and their teachers. Brilliant to see so much curiosity and enthusiasm for learning! 🧮✨ So chuffed I was able to team up with Dr @tomrocksmaths for the first time at a public speaking event for our Ultimate Maths Battle, taking on history, sport and video games. ⚔️🎮🏆 Something tells me this won’t be our last showdown! Also great to finally meet fellow science communicator Dr @shinisomara and have a proper catch-up with Dr Holly Ellis about navigating the world of media. Always lovely connecting with people who share a passion for making science accessible to everyone. 🙌 Thanks New Scientist Live for two fantastic days! #NewScientistLive #Science #Maths #SciComm #Education

Symphony of the Stones at Garni Gorge, Armenia. The hexagonal pattern is the result of ‘columnar jointing’ where fracturing occurs in cooling igneous rocks such as the basalt seen here. Whilst hexagons are most common due to the regularity of the pattern, what others can you see?

Taking photos with my favourite maths communicators holding my book. A new genre. This is a “proof” version so the cover is boring. The real one is FABULOUS.

It’s been a busy week of talks in the Oxford area, from Cheney School last Friday to Abingdon School this Wednesday. Thanks to everyone that came along - I hope I was able to convince you of the fun to be had using mathematical modelling in your favourite fantasy universe!

Join us for the second-annual CS50x Puzzle Day at Oxford! CS50 is back in the United Kingdom! Join us at the University of Oxford on Friday, November 6, 2026, 5pm–10pm, for a CS50x Puzzle Day in collaboration with Oxford Lifelong Learning, with Professor @davidjmalan from @Harvard, Professor Daniel Wilson from @UniofOxford, Professor Nicholas Day from Oxford, and Professor Tom Crawford from Oxford (and Cambridge and @tomrocksmaths). CS50x Puzzle Day is an opportunity to collaborate on teams of 2, 3, and 4 to solve a packet of puzzles (i.e., logic problems). Among the event’s goals is to send a message that computer science is more about problem-solving than it is about, say, programming. Puzzles are not programming challenges. No prior CS or programming experience needed, just logic and smarts! No team? No problem! We will help teams form at the event. Tickets on sale until 4pm on November 4, 2026. eventbrite.com/e/cs50x-puzzl…
