Unpopular opinion: AI does make SEO easier. It makes scaling tactics trivially simple. What it can’t do is tell you which tactics are worth scaling. That’s still strategy. That’s still the hard part. That’s still where years of reps actually matter.

I just discovered a brand new (and totally fascinating) way to come up with content ideas for your blog. It’s your 404 pages. (Stay with me…) I randomly checked if Ahrefs Blog had any 404 pages with lots of backlinks pointing at them. And saw hundreds of them.. Wow! I pinged my Head of Content Ryan Law asking why so much of our blog content was now “dead.” Turns out — none of it was ever alive. These are all hallucinated URLs from AI-generated articles. 🤯 Basically, hundreds of sites have published AI-generated content and never checked whether the links in those articles actually point to real pages. But here's the part that really blew my mind... Most of these hallucinated URLs actually make sense. AI "thinks" we should have articles on: /internal-linking /how-important-are-backlinks /domain-authority /content-decay etc. And... we don't. AI literally found gaps in our content strategy that we missed. So now we're going to publish articles on all these topics and turn hundreds of broken hallucinated links into real backlinks. If you run a blog, go check your 404s right now. You might be sitting on a goldmine of content ideas that AI already "voted" for. (go to Ahrefs' Site Explorer > "Best by links" report > filter by 404 status code) Fun times. 😅

To my fellow Muslims in America, Let’s stop pretending. This country took us in. It gave us safety, schools, jobs, freedom to worship, things most of our parents and grandparents never had back home. America didn’t just let us live here; it let us become something bigger. But some of us still act like we’re just visiting. Some put the ummah first, no matter their hypocrisies. Some think sharia should ever come before the Constitution. Some make excuses the second another “Allahu Akbar” shooter opens fire on our streets. Some scream for foreign flags while American soldiers and cops are bleeding ten miles from the White House. If that’s you, do us all a favor: go home. Go back to the country you or your parents ran from. They obviously need you more than we do. The rest of us; the ones who tear up at the national anthem, who thank God every day we’re American, who see every citizen here as family, aren’t going anywhere. And we’re done staying quiet while the loudest voices make the rest of us look bad. So here it is, plain and simple: Put America first or get the f*** out. No third option. - An American Muslim who bleeds red, white, and blue. ❤️🤍💙

SEMRush stock has been on a consistent decline all year, even with it's pivot to AI and enterprise, and it's a damning tale... One that I am considering shorting 😅 Wall Street once loved SEMRush! It was a nimble SaaS riding the SEO boom while big tech focused on their ad monopolies... Fast forward to 2025 and the stock is down over 50% in six months, guidance was slashed, and is now an injured unicorn simmering on the edge of a sub-billion dollar valuation. This is all because of a handful of factors: - There core SMB and freelancer base, the lifeblood of SEMRush’s early growth, is bleeding out, and that's an industry wide problem. - The enterprise pivot? Still too early, too expensive, and not compelling enough. Large marketing teams already sit inside Adobe, Salesforce, or HubSpot ecosystems... - They bloated out the platform with too many mediocre tools, becoming a jack of all trades, master of none. Meanwhile, the macro reality for search is brutal: CTR from organic is collapsing as Google continues rolling out AI Overviews, AI Mode and pushing zero click experiences whilst publicly saying they will actually increase clicks somehow. Even if SEMRush builds the best tools in the world, they’re chasing a shrinking TAM. And the market’s noticed. CAC is rising, LTV is dropping, and EPS just flipped negative (-$0.04 when investors expected positive). Unless SEMRush can reinvent itself as a data infrastructure layer powering next gen marketing agents, not just another SEO SaaS, this decline isn’t cyclical, it’s existential. AI hasn’t just disrupted search. It’s rewritten the entire value chain of how marketing intelligence is created, analyzed, and acted on. And if SEMRush can’t evolve faster than the algorithms it once measured… Then this chart might not be a dip, it might be a preview. 📉

Google just made a subtle but massive change Last month, Google quietly removed the num=100 search parameter. This means you can no longer view 100 results at once. The default max is now 10. Why does this matter? - Most LLMs (OpenAI, Perplexity, etc.) rely (directly or indirectly) on Google’s indexed results, alongside their own crawlers. - Overnight, their access to the “long tail” of the internet was cut by 90%. The fallout: - According to Search Engine Land, 88% of sites saw a drop in impressions. - Reddit, which often ranks in positions 11–100, saw its LLM citations plummet. Its stock dropped 15%. For startups, this is brutal. Visibility just got harder. Reddit as part of AEO just changed entirely. It’s no longer enough to build a great product you need to crack distribution first. Because if people can’t discover you, they’ll never get to evaluate you. Most engineers seem to always neglect this reality, but a mediocre product with great distribution will always beat a great product with mediocre distribution. As Peter Thiel says: “Most businesses get zero distribution channels to work: poor sales rather than bad product is the most common cause of failure. If you can get just one distribution channel to work, you have a great business. If you try for several but don’t nail one, you’re finished. Superior sales and distribution by itself can create a monopoly, even with no product differentiation. The converse is not true. No matter how strong your product — even if it easily fits into already established habits and anybody who tries it likes it immediately — you must still support it with a strong distribution plan." Distribution > Product (h/t Adarsh Appaiah on LinkedIn)
