I have been a fan of Steven Pinker since my college days but he is going to be very surprised by what the next 12 months will feel like. We’re at the point of the curve where every doubling of capability will be a revolution.
On AI and "superintelligence": "The power will increase, but there's no point at which it's meaningful to say, 'Well, yesterday we didn't have superintelligence. Today we do have superintelligence.' That's why I think it's meaningless to say, 'What will happen if one day we have superintelligence?' I don't even understand the question. It's: 'Will technology improve?' Almost certainly. It will get better. It'll never be omniscient. It'll never be omnipotent. That's out of comic books out of religion. There are laws of physics. There are limits on information. There's no system that could learn the position and velocity of every particle in the universe. So as long as that is true, there's not going to be an AI system that can do anything or can know everything. But they will get—obviously, like any technology—they'll get more powerful." This is the distillation of talent, whether creative or in business, or in life.
People will say, 'There are a million ways to shoot a scene,' but I don't think so. I think there're two, maybe. And the other one is wrong. DAVID FINCHER

Judith is absolutely right. Great thread.
The amount of Germany hate-posting on the back of @patrickc‘s tweet is astonishing. Seems everyone has seen the light, aka read Ray Dalio‘s Changing World Order, and now has hot takes on the country’s decline being an inevitability, feeling superior for being able to „speak the hard truth“ and announcing to the world that the only thing left to do is getting the hell out of this country, which will most certainly fall into the hands of the far right. I agree things need to to change, urgently and drastically. I agree we must reinvigorate the economy and boost entrepreneurship. I agree that our labour laws, energy costs, bureaucracy and low investment into future technology is unbefitting of the reality we live in today and of a country like Germany. But to speak of all the ills in Germany like it was some doomed hell hole without even for a second realising or acknowledging that the country still has SO MUCH to offer makes me disappointed and angry. This especially goes out to the 30/40 year olds who got to benefit from what was built up in the past and could now make a massive contribution to changing things for the better but who instead seem to just blame politicians and bureaucracy for everything. I join your harsh criticism - I reject your defeatism entirely.

The great @patrickc isn’t wrong. But at the same time I feel like no generational company or exceptional founder ever failed because of notary meetings… Yes, we need to work on bureaucracy. For sure. No, this is not the reason why Germany isn’t producing more world class startups. From my pov it’s much more nuanced: first and foremost we need to upgrade our mentality: more ambitious input will mathematically produce more ambitious output. Basta. And only then it’s about more private capital flowing into the ecosystem, talent acquisition, and generally speaking less bureaucratic burdens.

If you’re looking for high conviction investors in Europe look no further than the investors who backed Helsing in 2021. At the time Defence investing in Europe wasn’t just unfashionable, it was unthinkable for most firms. Despite that, Daniel Ek (@eldsjal) and @shak of @PrimaMateria_ led the €100M round in Helsing. 5 years later the company is worth $18bn and the round has been massively oversubscribed. Being contrarian pays.

Bavaria is the home of @HelsingAI. We’re grateful for the support of the local community of Hallbergmoos and the Bavarian government. Thank you.
(Foto: Archiv)

From sea, to sky, to shore – this is the first launch of our battle proven HX-2 from a coastal vessel. The trial took place off a fast insertion craft in the coastal waters off Plymouth, Helsing's maritime home.

The modern battlefield is becoming a no-go zone for humans, whether dismounted or in armoured vehicles. We’d better prepare for this or risk countless lives.
