Tonight we finished the final (Capstone) course for the terminal master's degree program in I/O Psychology for the 2021 graduating cohort at @waynestate @WayneStateCLAS . Eighteen students are completing the program, having completed the entirety of their graduate program online.
For #iopsych people in the Detroit area:
Tomorrow (Thursday) MAIOP is meeting at Detroit Shipping Company at 6:30. Come and meet with other I/O psychology professionals. Everyone is welcome.
Message me if you need more details!
I'm watching my cousin's daughter's high school graduation right now via livestream.
The student speeches are amazing: themes of resilience, overcoming adversity, flexibility, and rejecting perfectionism.
The graduating class navigated through so much during their high school career: multiple hurricanes (one of which damaged the school so badly that students had to attend class in a neighboring high school for nearly a year), a pandemic, and the Texas Snowpocalypse.
A real life example of an unreliable narrator
WeWork's CEO tells WSJ there is an easy way for companies to spot their most engaged employees: They’re the ones who want to come back to the office. “Those who are least engaged are very comfortable working from home,” he said. on.wsj.com/3w71lst

Some fun personal news:
In 2017, I got a call from the documentary filmmaker George Roy. He wanted to interview me for a documentary about the Vanderbilt bowling team.
Four years later, it's finally going to air!

Since 2006, Vandy bowling has made it to the national championships every year, and won a second national championships in 2018. The team has had the same coach, John Williamson, since day 1 and I am so impressed by his leadership in building an absolute powerhouse program.
The documentary is going to air on ESPN's SEC Network on Monday at 9pm Eastern. I have never seen it, no one in the Vandy program has seen it, and I have no idea what to expect!

I've had more people reach out to me this week trying to fill a position than I've had in a loooong time.
Potential job seekers: now is a great time to put some irons in the fire if you're thinking about a move.

It is far more “expensive and complicated” to have people with disabilities not given accommodations at work and pushed out of the workforce as a result.
When I read the Americans w/ Disabilities Act, my first thought was about how expensive & complicated it was going to be. If my #empathy muscle had been stronger, I would have seen past the compliance difficulties.
Laws are not the answer to discrimination & bias.
Empathy IS.
I realize I am not even addressing the most flawed part of this tweet. But seriously: 26% of US adults have a disability of some kind. It is enormously more expensive to have these people potentially not working because of employers refusing to make accommodations.
Hair discrimination is racial discrimination. There is no place for it in the workplace.
For too long, so-called "unprofessional" hair styles and "unkempt" appearances have pushed Black and brown people out of the workplace and kept us from showing up in the world as our full, authentic selves.
Today, we are re-introducing the #CROWNAct to address this problem.
