A crowd is shouting outside the bar. John insists they're just liberals who want equality for everyone. Elijah asks the question nobody asks: if hatred has a logic, why the Jews? Part 4: Strange Hatred A hand-drawn graphic novel, now animated.

Jews have been hated in many lands. India is the land where, for some two thousand years, they were simply neighbours.

Qatar funds a global TV network, has hosted Hamas's political leaders since 2012, and is the largest foreign funder of American universities. Now Israel's elections chief wants the Shin Bet to find out whether it also funded an election. The night before the vote, police seized envelopes holding over 24,000 shekels, next to party ballot slips.

Progress is a fine road. Make it a god, and every old thing becomes an obstacle on it, starting with a people that refuses to stop being old.

Facts tell you what happened. A story tells you what it felt like to be there. Hatred has always understood the second better than we have.

Germany's new antisemitism commissioner, as she took office: those who make antisemitic statements today "no longer fear any consequences." A hatred that hides is a disease. A hatred that no longer fears anything is a culture.

Europe, you've seen this film. In 2022, Belgian police found bags of cash in the European Parliament bribery probe the press called "Qatargate." This week Israel's elections chief asked the Shin Bet to probe suspected foreign funding of Israel's vote, and reports name Qatar. Israel may be the sequel. Ask Brussels how the first one ended.

To every Jewish kid who is the only one in his class: "In a place where there are no men, strive to be a man." (Hillel, Avot 2:5)

A lecture on hatred is forgotten by Friday. A drawing of a man holding a sign he never read stays.

Tolerance is a fine servant. Make it a god, and it starts deciding who is too intolerable to be tolerated.

A child who meets Jews only in a Holocaust lesson learns how Jews died. Nobody shows him how they lived.

Schools must teach children about Jewish life, not just Jew-hatred At twelve years old, Jonathan Frisher found himself having to explain antisemitism to his classmates. The only Jewish pupil at his school, he faced Nazi salutes, references to gas chambers and swastikas. Somehow the responsibility for explaining why this was wrong fell to him. We cannot expect Jewish children to feel they belong if we fail to recognise just how many different ways there are to be Jewish Jonathan Frisher should never have been responsible for teaching his classmates about antisemitism. The measure of our success must be that Jewish pupils can walk into school without having to decide how much of their Jewishness to leave outside. jewishnews.co.uk/schools-mus…

The Jewish Sephardic community of Escalona in Castile, central Spain, dates back to the Muslim period. It remained in place after the Christian conquest of the town in 1083 under Alfonso VI. In 1130 Alfonso VII granted the town a fuero that placed Jews on equal footing with Christians and Moors in most matters. A Jew could not serve as judge in a lawsuit involving a Christian. The same charter set a fine of 300 sueldos for the murder of a Jew. Jews owned vineyards and other real estate throughout the life of the settlement. The community appears to have been small. It was not listed separately in the 1290 tax distribution among Castilian Jewish communities. It was destroyed during the widespread persecutions of 1391, with many killed and others forced to convert. It was reestablished in the fifteenth century and remained modest in size. In 1453 real estate in the town was granted to R. Salamon, physician to Countess Juana Pimentel, in recognition of his services. Municipal archives show that a Jewish quarter existed between 1477 and 1489. There was a Jewish slaughterhouse. After the segregation measures of 1483 the local mosque was placed inside the Jewish quarter. Don Isaac Abarbanel had business interests in Escalona. The community continued until the general expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. A traditional explanation of the town’s name links Escalona to Ashkalon in the Land of Israel, a connection noted by several early modern Spanish writers. This is the documented history of the Jews of Escalona from the medieval sources and the standard encyclopedic accounts. Learn more about Jewish History. Hit the follow button.

On this day—October 27, 1984 Israel began the covert airlift that would bring 8,000 Ethiopian Jews out of Sudanese refugee camps to their ancestral homeland. Israel saw them face famine, civil war, and persecution, and then acted. It was the first major modern rescue of an ancient Jewish community that had lived in isolation for centuries. Israel is the only country that brought black Africans out of Africa en masse not in chains, but as full citizens.

2022. Russia's foreign minister is asked how you can "denazify" a country whose president is Jewish. His answer: Hitler also had Jewish origins. When the storm broke, his ministry added that Jews had collaborated with the Nazis. When the facts don't fit the hatred, they don't change the theory. They change the Jew. Follow for more.

What went wrong? In 2015 Merkel said "We can do this," and about 890,000 asylum seekers arrived in Germany in a single year. When the problems began, many European politicians feared how it would look more than what was happening. Israel tried it before them. In 2005 it left Gaza, down to the last Jew, and was told it was a step toward peace. Two years later Hamas ruled there. Eighteen years later, October 7. Since then Israel asks less "how will it look?" and more "what is right?" Will Europe learn the lesson before it's too late?

In one week America votes. In Michigan, a Senate candidate who called Israel "bloodthirsty" and accused it of genocide leads in the polls. A year ago New York elected a mayor. This year he marked October 7 with a statement that, according to his critics, did not include the word "Jews." This is not right vs. left. The Pittsburgh killer came from the far right. The real question: what makes a society fall in love with the very people who see it as the villain?
