This project was incredible. So deserved. 👏👏👏
Congrats to Sharon Su, the 2023 recipient of our $5,000 Hedwig Holbrook Prize! Over the course of her Spotlight Fellowship, @doodlyroses created and performed a new piano concerto based on a solo piano sonata by Fanny Mendelssohn.

Turn The Spotlight does incredible work. It’s the kind of organization I want to be a part of and help support no matter how busy life gets because we need this work like the air we breathe.

Three cheers for conductor Alexandra Enyart, winner of a $1,500 Spotlight Prize! Alexis created Witness, an exploration of transgender identity intended to help reduce the staggering percentage of trans people who attempt suicide.

Working with her mentor, @LidiyaConductor, Alexis realized early on that she would not be able to collaborate with an orchestra as she had envisioned pre-pandemic.

She pivoted to a more intimate realization of her vision, composing and performing a collection of solo pieces that has now been premiered through Taking Imperfect Action Concert Series, staged with Third Eye Theatre Ensemble, and recorded for release on all streaming platforms.
Join us in celebrating composer Niloufar Nourbakhsh, winner of a $2,500 Spotlight Prize! For her Spotlight Project, @Nilou_Nour created Another Birth, the first composition residency at the Afghanistan National Institute of Music.

Nilou mentored 7 young Afghan women to compose solo and chamber pieces. When Kabul fell days before the long-planned premiere concert, Nilou shifted her focus immediately, working tirelessly with activists across the globe to secure safe passage out of Afghanistan for all seven.

Bonus: the concert has now been compiled digitally and all premieres will soon be available to stream on the New Music USA website!
