The imperative for the word-monger is the silence. If you stay silent and watch, all sorts of strange creatures come down to drink. Silence and a noose, then, are all you need. — Lawrence Durrell Jean-Claude Sauer (1960)

Impressive new entrance to the Kerameikos cemetery site in Athens, opening up access ♿ from the Omonia side. One of my favourite archaeological sites, the area was named for the potters who sourced clay here from the banks of the Eridanos to make the famous funerary vases.⚱️

“The UK economy has been stuck in a slow-moving crisis for 18 years.” @graceblakeley argues falling confidence, stagnant wages, rising bills and weak public services demand a much bigger response than John Healey’s cautious first Budget. Read more 👇

A Wren dispatch rider, London, c.1942. During the Second World War, women of the WRNS (Women’s Royal Naval Service) took to motorcycles to carry important messages and documents across London. Here a Wren checks her leather dispatch pouch beside her Triumph motorcycle. Many of these women were already experienced motorcyclists before joining up. A striking glimpse of the women who helped keep Britain’s wartime communications moving. #WW2 #WomensHistory #WartimeBritain #1940s

A train journey does not begin or end at the station platform. Convenient bike parking and easy access to the railway system are essential elements of a transport network that enables people to travel seamlessly from door-to-door.🧵

Having your photograph taken on Clapham Common, around 1877. A nanny poses with the child in her care while a photographer takes their picture. That strange-looking cart beside them is his mobile darkroom, where the photograph could be developed on the spot. Photographers were a familiar sight on Clapham Common, particularly on Sundays and holidays. Photo by John Thomson, c.1877. #VictorianLondon #VictorianHistory #Photography

Happy 102nd Birthday to the incredible Dorothea Barron!🇬🇧❤️ A true WW2inspiration, Dorothea joined the WRNS at just 18, even putting cardboard in her shoes to meet the height requirement! “I put my hair up and stood up very tall, as tall as I could.” She went on to teach semaphore signalling to troops ahead of D-Day. What a remarkable lady! Thank you for your service, Dorothea.

Geoffrey Stuart (Gerd Werner Stein) speaks about his D-Day experience: "We then left the camps on D-Day and travelled overnight to somewhere near Gosport, ready for embarkation the following day. It was midnight when the heavy tanks started rolling towards their destination. The noise must have been deafening because women in their night wear opened their windows and waved us on. They realised that we were part of the invasion force and cheered us on our way. It was very exciting for us driving through the night and having these women waving us on. It gave us a huge boost."
