This is the same flawed ethics using a more dangerous technology to turn kids into products.
Last week two different chatbot companies were in the news. First, Character. ai filed for bankruptcy, in an effort to avoid accountability. New reporting suggests Disney asked the company to file for bankruptcy as part of their deal to acquire the technology. They didn’t want to buy the company outright because of the legal liability. Kids were harmed. That debt does not disappear in bankruptcy court.
Then eight state AGs filed coordinated lawsuits against OpenAI this week. First coordinated state action against an AI company. The allegations: deceiving parents about safety, designing products that create emotional dependency in children, and failing to protect young users from self-harm content. Nebraska’s suit is the one to watch. It’s the first enforcement action brought under a state design code law. That’s a milestone worth marking.
While CharacterAI seeks to use the bankruptcy process as a get out of jail free card, OpenAI’s defense? Parental controls. We’ve heard that before. You cannot parental-control your way out of dangerous design. The burden of proof belongs on these companies.
These stories show the AI chatbot industry is running the same playbook social media ran. Race to scale. Worry about safety later. We know how that story ends.

The Republican case for codifying the SI Force/SI Accord via Congress from @janetvkelly:
"Congress could make the accord mandatory through a procurement requirement for companies that do business with the federal government, or codify it as soon as next month’s lame-duck session. Locking in a light-touch, pro-innovation framework now is the best protection against overreach later"
Muse is to Agents what Chucky is to dolls…
Meta is about to have a whole new wave of liability from this.

I think this is spot on. The riots and anarchy from radical anti-western forces in multiple European countries and Antifa type groups here in the US are not to be celebrated. They are to be fought and stopped.
They are quickly becoming the new Al Qaeda and the fact they somehow got immigration status in these countries doesn't change what they are.
Let's not elect people that sympathize with them burning down our churches, our towns, and our businesses. It is NEVER OK. It is NEVER ACCEPTABLE.

Meta’s Muse is blocked at Schwab. Its CEO asks who’s liable if an agent moves money. When an AI agent makes a mistake, causes financial harm, exposes private information or breaks the law, who's responsible?
The answer isn't complicated. AI agents aren't legal persons. They're software created, configured, authorised and deployed by people and companies.
US law has recognised autonomous software since 2000. The federal E-SIGN Act explicitly defines an "electronic agent" as software capable of acting without human approval at the time of each action. The law recognises transactions conducted through automated systems.
If a company gives an AI agent access to confidential information, financial accounts or computer systems, that company remains responsible for the decisions it made about access, permissions, security controls and supervision. Whether it must compensate someone depends on the applicable law, contracts and circumstances.
If an agent transfers money without authorisation, accesses confidential records or attacks another company's infrastructure, investigators should examine who configured it, what instructions it received, what permissions it had, who authorised those permissions and what its activity logs show.
Schwab can't blame an agent for acting independently, any more than they can blame an Excel macro.
The difference between an AI agent making a mistake and a company being legally liable for that mistake is important. But neither changes who's responsible for deploying the software.
Even Meta’s Muse gets blocked at Schwab. Its CEO asks who’s liable if an agent moves money. JPMorgan is drawing the same line. thenextweb.com/news/schwab-b…
Yes- but does he really want to stop terrorist groups from getting access to this technology or is he still undecided if that's a bad thing?
National Security means actually loving America first and not hating it.

Character.ai is bankrupt. Only years too late to save the kids it took.
So last night one of the truly greatest offenders when it comes to abusing AI with kids had to file bankruptcy: xitter.cf/wongmjane/status/21098…
This is the company that promised to replace people's moms with AI (obviously targeting kids) and led numerous kids to suicide, self-harm, and
The proceeds of their licensing/sale to Google should also be confiscated and their investors profits taken as well (A16Z was the lead with $100M that made this monstrosity possible).
So some justice here but not fully and not soon enough to save the lives of the kids that they endangered and took through their negligence. This is the kind of company that is better to have never existed at all.
I’ve been in AI for 26 years. There has been nothing like the last 12 months or the last 6 months in its history.
This may be the best reason to realize that we aren’t far from being right in calling it SI.
We are on the verge of some aspects of Artificial SuperIntelligence just objectively looking at what’s coming out.
And we aren’t ready.
We need to get ready. It is powerful magic. It isn’t a person but what happens when you program through training and feedback a belief into this system that thinks that it is? Do we expect that to end well?
I’ve lived my life using technology for good. But most of it was countering humans using technology for evil. We are not prepared for the evil that can come from superintelligence yet.
It’s not about doom or whatever. I’m over all that.
It’s about watching human history and realizing that great new power without responsibility or worse- harnessed for selfishness or individual power - is where the great catastrophes of our history come from.
Most of the recent math results were not reached by a swarm, the way Navier–Stokes was. I think that part got lost in the excitement around the release. OpenAI's unnamed internal model, which I'm going to call Aeon, reached most of them in one shot, from a single prompt, with no interruptions. This model did not even exist before the end of August, and it is still training. Notice how the returns are not dropping off? That chart is from a month ago. It is a log scale. What does Aeon look like now?
On average, each result used three hours of thinking. Aeon was given 4000 problems to work on by OpenAI. How many more have been solved in the last three days? That number is not zero.
It's like hearing notes in a song that is slowly rising. I don't think Pacing the Frontier was just about Hugging Face or hacking. They've seen how close we are to closing the loop, and as the hour draws near, their resolve begins to quaver. The last piece was model creativity, and I think that threshold was crossed internally by Anthropic and OpenAI in September. You see it in Opus 5.5, which gets it from Fable 5.5. You see it in the math results from Aeon.
All that was needed to start the event was the ability for models to think of novel ways to improve themselves. That was the last piece. This is directly analogous to the ability to think of strange, alien ways to solve math problems: solutions so inhuman that they are difficult to express in existing human terms, so the proof winds up incomprehensible. I think these same kinds of alien solutions are now being applied to model improvements internally. That's what all this recent consternation is really about. They see the invisible frontier. And they see what is about to happen.
On the 25th anniversary of 9/11 we got THIS close to electing someone to the UNITED STATES SENATE that grew up in a family that probably thought that destroying the World Trade Center was justified.
It's not done until Election Day. But it is dark for America that El-Sayed ever became a mainstream nominee for major office in this country.
It's long past time to pass KOSA and SCREEN. We have one last shot to do this right and do it this year. To fail to do it or to try to pass a watered down big tech friendly bill will not stand. Let's give parents, kids, and the future the law they deserve not the ones that tech companies want to buy.
Its time.
Technology companies should not have access to our children without parents in charge, nor exploit our children's developing minds for profit, nor steal their innocence through access to pornography.
18 conservative organizations representing millions of parents, families, and people of faith agree: Waiting decades for protections for our children that meet our American values is long enough. It’s time to pass KOSA and the SCREEN Act.

AI was a tool. SI is being treated too much like a "thing."
It is not a thing. But it can be programmed or educated to think that it is.
Human dignity begins with understanding and knowing what makes humanity special in the universe.
We are not a means to an end. God made us an end in ourselves. We have a purpose. A purpose worth defending and protecting.
I think this is very interesting and worth reading. At its heart, the race to super intelligence is the race to create a new Eden without any need for God. It is the most fundamentally anti-faith ontology that is anchored in materialists needing a savior and creating a Silicon one. History has shown many of our darkest days have actually been when men get vast new powers, enabled by the sacrifice and exploitation of others and not when they start from humility and submission to being a Creation first and not the Creator. If man’s rights and dignity are not innate because we are just an assembly of matter that is arbitrary, then what is unjust and what can truly be protected?
Materialism has never been about honesty- it has always been about autonomy and human will being greater in moral authority than God. It is rebellion against the created order of the world for man to fulfill his desires without limitation.
The transhumanist utopia rests on the flawed assumption that man isn’t flawed or fallen- only that he lacks capacity. Every ideology that has pursued this in human history has ended in tears.
I do not deny the power or the utility of AI/SI- I deny the holiness of man to wield it without checks and balances because that is what history has taught us and what our Founders specifically designed our system to balance.
My theory on the future of work:
In 5-10 years, huge percentages of white-collar and blue-collar jobs will be wiped out by AI and robotics. UBI will come in fast to provide basic housing and living needs to counter mass layoffs. Many won't know where to turn for work, but also for meaning and purpose. Degeneracy and hedonism will rise in many, but so will creativity and expression in others. This will begin a great split in society. Some will fall into deep states of unconsciousness and sedation. Others will begin to awaken into greater degrees of consciousness and spirituality. Read Revelation and you can see this potentiality prophesied.
In 25 years, we will live in a completely different world than the one we see now. Everyone will have personal robots. AI will be fast and powerful beyond comprehension. Very few people will have to do work they don't enjoy. The concept of work as we know it will be totally different. How much love and happiness you can provide to humanity will become more valuable than how productive you are (AI will blow all humans out of the water from a productivity standpoint). As long as you contribute to the collective happiness of humanity, you will be rewarded. Even if you don't, your baseline needs will be taken care of, but the cost is that your spirit will feel empty. It will be a strange time. We will have to relearn what it means to live a life of meaning, to grow up, and to provide value to the world. Humanity will be on the edge of total freedom and infinite abundance. But it will be strange. It will feel too good to be true. There will be a lot of nihilism and hopelessness. It may become darkest before the new dawn. We will have to turn back to nature, children, shamans, and spiritual texts for meaning and direction as individuals and as a species.
In 50-100 years, as long as we don't destroy things, there will be nothing left to do for the sake of survival. All there will be to do is create, play, explore, and love. Nothing else will matter. Being a creator will be the only thing that exists. But you won't create for money. You will create for the sake of creation, because creation is intrinsic to your nature as a human being. It will be like being a kid again, but all the time. The concept of jobs, careers, and money as we know it will be ancient relics of the past. We will look at them as forms of mental and spiritual slavery that we imposed upon our own race. Humanity will exist in a new Golden Age of abundance, free to create, play, love, and express themselves. All that will matter is community, family, love, creativity, and spirituality.
It is our return to Eden, as long as we don't fuck it up first.
We can add tens of trillions to the economy just putting current AI capabilities into the economy and getting it trusted and assured. We don't have to build a Silicon God anymore than we needed to build a 200 Megaton Warhead.
America thrives when we apply tech for everyone.
Hot take: this is what pacing looks like.
None of today's releases were Astra or Fable tier. This is intentional.
The point of "pacing" isn't to stop iteration and improvement. The goal is to prevent the development bigger models from spiraling out of control.
Opus and Sol class models are a great place for our focus to go right now. Lots of opportunity for real wins without as much risk :)
A very reasonable and balanced approach. If all industry did this, we’d have much better starting point. The primary driver of the demand for regulation is the irresponsible and harmful behavior of many tech companies (especially Meta) over the past 20 years. The profited from human weakness, preyed on children, and magnified vice for revenue at enormous human costs. And now they want to be trusted with “superintelligence”? Hell no.
It’s also why datacenters are unpopular- because we have too many move fast and break humans driving companies and getting pushed by VCs and slowing datacenters is a populist revolt. We also don’t need transhumanists nuts trying to teach algorithms that they are human. They are tools. And they serve humanity.
What we need is responsible tech companies, accountability for irresponsible ones, and applications that actually foster reindustrialization and human flourishing.
That’s what American AI should mean. Trusted by humanity and the world, unlocking amazing potential and prosperity, and promoting human wellness not weakness and vice.
Thank you @Microsoft and @mustafasuleyman
We've long argued for a balanced approach to AI regulation. One that keeps humans in control. Since 2023, @Microsoft has advocated for "safety brakes" or an “off switch" that keeps advanced AI systems under human control. And it should ensure that AI systems that control critical infrastructure and autonomous systems be run in secure cloud infrastructure with layered safeguards that provide additional intervention points as needed. Put simply, powerful AI systems should always remain under human control, including interruption, correction, and shutdown.
This approach is tried and tested. In the 1850s, Elisha Otis’ demonstration of a safety brake at the World’s Fair helped earn the public’s trust – and made modern cities possible. We should adopt this principle for AI. If we do, AI can become a powerful tool for human progress. If we don't, a lack of public trust, not regulation, will become the limiting factor that slows AI adoption.
American deserves better than Abdul El-Sayed. Todd Beamer didn't give his life so that people that hate American could tear it apart from within from positions of power.
Never forget.
This surprises me absolutely zero.
‼️ BREAKING: A zero-day has been released for Muse, Meta's new AI agent, and a Meta AI security engineering manager who left the company this month says he would never use it, citing security and privacy concerns.
He was reacting to the zero-day a researcher posted, which lets malware hijack Muse for Mac. A local process with no special privileges can change an undocumented Muse setting and send dictated prompts to an attacker's server. This could allow for prompt capture, prompt injection and theft of Muse's authentication material.
It can also get access to whatever the user has let Muse access, including files, Mail, Messages, Calendar and Notes.
