Tibetans protest against Xi Jinping’s visit to India
In New Delhi, Tibetans living in exile held a march against Xi Jinping’s visit to the BRICS summit. They chanted slogans, carried posters and trampled images of the Chinese leader. Police detained several protesters.
The demonstrators accuse Beijing of repressing and assimilating Tibetans and are calling for the repeal of a new law on “ethnic unity”. They also demanded the release of political prisoners and called for dialogue with representatives of the Dalai Lama.
Xi Jinping is visiting India for the first time in seven years. His visit is expected to help improve relations between the two countries, which deteriorated sharply after the 2020 border conflict.
Wangdu Dordje, a representative of the Tibetan parliament-in-exile, also accused China of concealing information about victims of devastating floods in Tibet and Nepal.
