"Digital preservation means keeping the stored information cataloged, accessible, and usable on current media, which requires constant effort and expense. Furthermore, while contemporary information has economic value and pays its way, there is no business case for archives."

To save ourselves from a digital dark age, we need to practice long-term thinking with the vast amounts of information we produce online.

Staving off a Digital Dark Age requires foresight to prevent:
- Link rot, where the connections between sites become unusable
- Institutional decay, where information becomes stranded on the hard drives of defunct organizations
- File format drift, which can leave data unreadable
