Fuck, life isn’t fair.
My closest friend’s mom— who is an incredible woman, helped me through horrible times, and has overcome more than I can imagine— suffered a cardiac event, and subsequent brain damage, due to a lack of oxygen.
She’s currently unresponsive, showing no brain activity, and being kept alive by the doctors and nurses who are overseeing her.
Per those doctors, if she is still unresponsive tomorrow, she will be considered brain dead, and the family will need to make a decision on how to proceed. However, they also said that she *could* recover at some point during the night, or before her next round of testing. I’m not sure if that was just a comfort to her loved ones, or if it rings true as a realistic possibility. Essentially, as I understand it, any brain activity would be enough for there to be a chance; but inactivity means the worst.
Hug your loved ones tonight.
