Twitch is one of the saddest stories in tech. This company helped develop some of the most impressive live video technology the internet had ever seen. Amazon bought them for nearly $1 BILLION. Their technology eventually became valuable enough that Amazon built AWS products around the same infrastructure that powers Twitch. They completely changed internet culture. Then the pandemic handed them a GENERATIONAL opportunity. More viewers. More streamers. More creators. More cultural relevance than they could have ever asked for. And nearly 20 years into the Justintv/Twitch story, this is what we’re still talking about: “How do we stop groups of streamers from milking the feed?” “What if we change the viewer count in the Following tab… but leave it the same on the homepage?” Meanwhile YouTube is building an editor you can literally talk to. Meta is building personal AI assistants. TikTok is building AI creation tools, commerce systems and entirely new ways for creators to make money. While Twitch is still playing whack-a-mole with viewer counts and directory exploits. That’s what makes it so frustrating. This isn’t some startup trying to find product-market fit. This was THE livestreaming company. They had the technology. They had the culture. They had the creators. They had Amazon behind them. They had the pandemic hand them the biggest growth opportunity imaginable. Yet somehow we’re still watching a multi-billion dollar company burn meetings discussing the most pointless shit imaginable. Twitch doesn’t need another tiny update. It needs a new CEO and a completely new direction. teapawt.net/zachbussey/status/2102…
