Might not be true, but in my view the “space” gradually forked into two branches: The NFT space: bro culture, toxic optimism, America-centered, prone to being noticeable shaped by cabals. Few of its actors are versed in art; most aren’t. PFPs are the crowning achievements. Definitely where the money flows (even if it’s only a slow drip for most). Can be fun. The cryptoart space (or whatever you wanna call it— consists of all kinds of digital art distributed via blockchain): mostly curators, art consultants, and collectors who operate in the broader art world. More international than its counterpart. More sophisticated aesthetics overall, but also poorer. Plenty of smaller-scale projects. These two spaces overlap to some degree, and artists navigate both, some collectors too. Generative art is also in the overlap, but leans more toward the NFT world, in my opinion. Sometimes artists try to appeal to NFT tastes to make a buck (myself included). There are nice people in both, and there are bad actors in both. But to my eyes, they’re different circles, and I don’t see the point in trying to force these two communities into a single cultural identity. Or maybe I just got tired of commenting on specific events that keep repeating.
