A PERSONAL APPEAL ON INDIA’S DRAFT LABORATORY ANIMALS RULES, 2026
The draft rules may streamline approvals for scientific research. But efficiency must not come at the cost of independent oversight and animal welfare.
A few provisions deserve serious reconsideration:
●Rule 11: Allows institutional committees to approve mild and moderate experiments without prior central approval.
●Rule 5: Could permit exceptions for experiments involving stray or feral animals.
●Rule 21: Allows sourcing animals from unregistered establishments or open markets when registered sources are unavailable.
●Rule 15: Leaves key safeguards on pain, housing, rehabilitation and reuse to future guidelines.
These are legitimate concerns about accountability, transparency and the risk of conflicts of interest.
I urge the government to reconsider and redraft the rules, with stronger independent oversight, enforceable welfare standards and meaningful public consultation. If you share these concerns, please amplify this appeal and submit your objections before 5 November.
This is not a call to oppose science. It is a plea to ensure that scientific progress is guided by responsibility and compassion.

I would appeal to all to oppose the Draft Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Control and Supervision of Experiment, Breeding and Trading of Laboratory Animals) Rules, 2026.
The draft rules, circulated by the Centre, will allow capture and use of wild animals—including endangered or protected Show More species under vague "scientific justification”. The draft rules also permit experiments on community and free-ranging stray dogs and cats.
The rules also accommodate extreme procedures, like electric shocks, prolonged isolation of animals like dogs and monkeys and induced tumors Animal lovers have opposed this. PETA India has demanded withdrawal of these draft rules.
One thing is clear. Change in animal lab testing rules will encourage cruelty to animals. If ethics panel gets the powers for granting approval to such lab experiments, nobody can stop it.
During lab tests, animals undergo insufferable pain, but they cannot express it like humans. Rabbits, rats, monkeys and dogs are kept in small cages in labs, they are given needle pricks regularly. Since they are animals, no consent can be taken.
The ideal condition is: use of animals in lab trials must be kept to the bare minimum and care must be taken that the animals do not suffer pain. As far as possible, non-animal testing should replace animal testing, but the new draft rules will put the clock back.
In many countries animal testing is difficult and costly, and India may be used as the place at cheap costs. This is dangerous. We should register our objections over these new draft rules.
Since November 5 is the deadline, I would appeal to all to scan the relevant QR code to register your objections.

Students allege that 10–15 innocent campus dogs were captured and taken to a GHMC/ABC shelter in September.

I’ll tell you, people really suck. Last night after landing at the airport at 10 pm, I was driving home in Florida and saw a stray dog about to run into the highway. So I pulled over and got out of the car and chased the dog till it was out of the road. Eventually I was able to catch the dog, and when I was trying to lure the dog over, I noticed it was whimpering next to something on the side of the road. Turns out it was another dog, but the other dog appeared to be dead. It looked like someone hit the other dog with their car.
It was so sad. Honestly I feel like I’d rather see a dead human than a dead dog. It was so horrible and reminded me of how much more I like dogs over humans.
Long story short, I took the dog home with me and kept it in my back yard on the patio. She is very sweet. Sort of looks like a mix between a hound and a black mouth cur.
I don’t want to call animal control because I don’t want the dog to be put down. It made me realize, we really need emergency 24/7 animal shelters that are no kill shelters all across our country.
I didn’t sleep much because the poor dog was whimpering most of the night till she calmed down. Now I need to find this sweet girl a furever home!
Last month, I saved 2 more dogs that were dumped in the road by a junkie. Then I drove 3 hours to take them to a no kill shelter I convinced to stay open after hours till midnight so I could drop those 2 dogs off.
I feel like I’m that woman who is always bringing stray animals home.
I am not kidding when I say I am always picking up strays. We have an epidemic of dog dumping in our country. It should be a felony to dump your dog in the road or to abandon your animals near a road. People like that deserve to be hit by cars instead of their dogs.
Please don’t dump your dogs. I am getting tired of chasing dogs out of oncoming traffic but sadly I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon because humans suck.

I really hesitated to write this, but if I don’t speak up today, I will be facing a severe financial crisis within a week or two.

I have been completely without work for the last three months. My last project ended on June 30th, and since then I have knocked on every door I know—calling, texting, meeting contacts, and following up.
People say they will try, but after that first talk, the silence takes over. Calls go unanswered or get cut after a couple of rings. I honestly don't know whether the industry is shifting because of AI or if my age (52) is working against me, but despite over 13 years of solid experience in the field, nothing has materialized.
Now, my savings are down to the very end. I can barely hold out for another week or two.
I am a professional content writer, translator, and speaker who is comfortable on stage and in front of the camera. I write and translate fluently across Gujarati, Hindi, and English, with Gujarati being my strongest suit.
Many of you already know my grasp of politics and my political writing, but I am equally adept at covering Bollywood and cricket. My priority is media houses, digital platforms, or publications, but I am open to any genuine writing or translation opportunity.
I can work remotely or take up assignments on-site anywhere in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, as I need to be close to my elderly mother to take care of her health.

There are many reasons. But among them is the cruelty and callousness towards animals. Cats and dogs are maltreated. When even the death of tigers, leopards, lions and elephants don’t bother a society, it shows the absence of compassion and empathy for another living being. And without that, no one can be happy.
Not even a nation.
