Scorched by material existence,
the weary traveller
seeks a balm.
He trudges,
dragging his feet
till the road tapers
and he chances upon a riverside—
the banks of the Yamuna.
It is a night of the full autumn moon.
The dark waters,
sinuous in their glitter.
He lays himself down
on the cool sands
his eyes droop
like wilting day.
The moon, taking pity,
squeezes some silver,
moistens it with the dew
of Vrindavan flowers,
and rests it
on the pilgrim’s brow.
He stirs—
and hears maidens singing
in the bowers,
calling out to Krishna.
Their song is full of ache,
heavy with longing.
It is the sweetest melody
he has ever heard.
He sits up.
Looks at the moon
squinting at him
and implores:
“Oh moon,
lend me some white fire,
show me the path.
I need no balm.
I need—
this viraha,
this longing,
this ache.

It is not the time
to run them into ground
to let conversations drown
beneath the rumble of guns
& the deafening sound of bombs
It is not the time
to taper down
the voices of dissent
for peace may never be found
unless we burst the fascist bubble & lift the heavy shroud

As I ponder,
I remember
my train journeys,
the steady rhythm
of the engine,
its constant clink-clank
carrying us away
from the daily & the mundane
to a land of of happiness & joy.
Every worry,
every chore
left behind
as the train chugs on
through the miles.

Is poetry dead in me?
Now the rain is bland
And no heart aches
And longs to be in his arms–
It's all quiet after a dead night
He doesn't know
How my night is dead
So is poetry and him

The Voice in the Ruins
The village had three rules
for the ruins:
never enter after dusk,
never answer a voice from within,
and if you hear your name—
run.
No one remembered
who made the rules.
Only that the walls had stood
for centuries,
and the forest had grown around them
as though trying to keep
something in.
The year her brother vanished,
she began to dream of stone corridors
and a voice calling
from beneath the earth.
On Halloween eve,
she followed it.
Moonlight silvered the broken walls.
Rain darkened the stone.
In the empty windows,
the night held its breath.
Then—
her brother's voice.
I should never have come here.
She knew those words
from the last message
he had left behind.
Another voice answered
deep within the walls.
You said that last time.
The lantern trembled.
Along the passage,
names covered the stone—
some worn thin
by centuries of rain,
others sharp as fresh-cut wounds.
She found his name
near the end.
Beneath it,
tomorrow's date.
A whisper stirred behind her.
Don't touch it.
Her brother stood
where the passage darkened,
his face unchanged
since the night the world lost him.
For one breath,
she forgot the cold,
the rules,
the voices in the walls.
She stepped towards him.
He recoiled.
Not from her,
but from the space between them.
You have to leave.
She reached for his hand.
He drew his own against his chest,
as though even that small touch
might cost him something.
Please.
She had never heard
that word from him before.
Please, just go.
His gaze shifted
to the wall behind her.
And in his eyes,
she saw something worse than fear.
Recognition.
Then the wall beside her
spoke in her own voice—
I should never have come here.
The flame guttered.
Darkness closed over the passage.
And from somewhere
deep beneath the stones,
the ruins began
to whisper her name.

Some days I long
for a soul that can hear
what my silence weeps,
hold what my heart hides,
and find a little poetry
in the ruins of me.
