Better known as "Thrawn McEwok". Sithposting on sci-fi, occasional remarks on other things. Once co-wrote a Star Wars book, but that doesn't count for anything!

Not getting involved in whatever is going on with the green jedi drama. Had positive interactions with some who seemed genuinely passionate about the EU books and got quietly mass unfollowed/blocked by others. I’ll just continue enjoying Star Wars with whoever is chill with me.

lol the dumbass Google AI still thinks the fake planet we made up 20 years ago is official Star Wars lore
Replying to @coreyloses
When I was in middle school my friend and I added a fake planet to Wikipedia’s List of Star Wars Planets and it eventually became a multiple-choice option in a Star Wars trivia book 😎

This is why I love the internet: Until today I didn't know Inspector Morse was such a cunning linguist. He knows about -ize. (Thank you @Dbrown_beer for pointing me in Morse's direction)
And you'll find it a preference in the older Oxford dictionaries, as opposed to the Cambridge editions. Inspector Morse used that fact to catch a murderer who had attended Oxford.

This is like finding out “Torn” was a cover.
Bruno Ganz’s performance in ‘Downfall’ (2004) and Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal in ‘The Bunker’ (1981) imo seem to completely overshadow this biopic and ALEC GUINNESS’ phenomenal performance in it. HITLER: THE LAST TEN DAYS (1973)

One of the bigger mysteries of the original trilogy was how Vader found out so much about Luke Skywalker between ANH and empire. Marvel filled it in with a Boba Fett adventure. The only one to do it in a very profound way was Randy Stradley’s Empire run for Dark Horse. He told the story of a “good” imperial officer named Janek Sunber. Sunber does the right thing and wants to make a difference. We see him navigating a collapsing system of corruption in the empire. Then the bomb drops. We have already heard of him. He is “Tank”, Luke’s friend who went to the academy with Biggs. We are given a reunion between the friends and then the break off between them. Vader who is pursuing the Rebel who destroyed the Death Star finds out it is his son, but more than that. He finds out all about his son from one of his best friends. How he grew up, Owen and Beru, all of it. The only two people that realize Luke is Vader’s son is Vader and the reader. The story of Janek Sunber is one of the best comic stories told in the Star Wars universe and worth the time if you find the issues.

'The next worst thing to a battle lost is a battle won'. HG The Duke of Wellington.
Movie exaggeration or reality: did the dead form square? In this scene, Wellington rides across the battlefield, deep in thought, taking in the destruction around him. We see casualties apparently still lying in the shape of an infantry square. This was not merely a cinematic invention. Real life at Waterloo was every bit as dramatic. The 2nd Battalion, 30th Regiment of Foot formed square alongside the 73rd and endured eleven attacks during Ney’s great cavalry assault. When the 30th changed position, the dead and wounded traced the square’s former position. This haunting scene also applies to the 27th Inniskillings. Rifle officer John Kincaid described the regiment as: 'literally lying dead, in square.'

Sad to report that the Star Wars bodega location is no more. The structure that the Andor production used has been demolished as part of the Barbican’s renewal project.
Exploring London Andor locations with a bestie who is definitely part of it rather than just a tourist ! Made it inside the Brunswick Centre this time - Eedy Karn’s apartment block.

Mellody Hobson teared up during an emotional speech about why her husband George Lucas was unwilling to compromise on the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art: “I watched George up close,” Hobson said, explaining that she missed the earlier part of his career (the couple began dating in 2006 before marrying in 2013). “I wasn’t there for ‘Star Wars.’ I saw genius work, genuinely work, and it was awe inspiring. And he was fanatical at times, but the thing about a fanatical person is they’re a fan. He was a deep fan of these illustrators in this work, and he wanted them to be represented, and I became a deeper fan of his.” variety.com/2026/film/column…

“People yearn for the felt reality of an older place.” This is why I encourage adult Harry Potter fans to read Rebecca, Gormenghast, Dream of the Red Chamber: stories that draw on the same powerful archetypes, the yearning to live in a vast ancient place full of ritual.
Harry Potter cannot survive being greenscreened because the true star is not Harry but Hogwarts, in its stone and flame and weight and age. In its organic, living complexity. People yearn for the felt reality of an older place, imbued with metaphysical significance.

these documentaries are phenomenal: stylish, funny, insightful. they're sebaldian reveries where meades constantly plays with the format by, say, being towed into shot as a corpse in a cart, or violently elbowing his way through a group of children teapawt.net/JonPountney1/status/20…
I watched the first episode of Jonathan Meades' 'Abroad in Britain' last night, and thought pretty much straight away, why is the BBC no longer capable of making programming like this? It's 36 years old, but still whips along beautifully in its editing, music and 'Meades'

While shooting CUTTHROAT ISLAND in Malta, I brought my 16mm camera to make a black-and-white short film. When the production blew up the pirate ship, I captured the massive explosion. This was one of the last big-budget studio films to rely almost entirely on practical in-camera effects and stunts. Regardless of its initial reception, making this film was the adventure of a lifetime. This is from a recent scan of my original camera negative.
